FINA Women’s Water Polo Tournament Begins

PHOENIX, Arizona, Jan. 24. PRELIMINARY action in the FINA Women's Water Polo World League tournament began yesterday with the first of six rounds in the European division.

In Group A action, Hungary defeated Spain 12-9 in Mataro, Spain. Italy kicked off Group B competition with a 12-6 triumph over the Netherlands squad in Alphen aan den Rijn, The Netherlands.

Five more rounds of competition will take place in the European grouping. On Saturday, Jan. 26, Hungary will face Greece in Eger, Hungary and Italy will play Russia in Cetania, Italy. Other rounds include:
Round 3, Feb. 6: Greece-Spain in Athens, Greece and Russia-Netherlands in Kirishi, Russia
Round 4, Feb. 8-9: Hungary-Spain in Budapest, Hungary (8) and Italy-Netherlands in Avezzano, Italy (9).
Round 5, March 13: Greece-Hungary to be announced and Russia-Italy in Chelyabinsk, Russia
Round 6, March 16: Spain-Greece to be announced and Netherlands-Russia in Dordrecht, Netherlands

Later in the year, the women's Asia/Oceania and Americas tournaments will determine additional teams which will appear in the World League Super Final in Beijing, China, June 3-8. The Asia/Oceania tournament, to feature teams from Australia, China, Japan and New Zealand, will be held May 9-14 in Auckland, New Zealand. The Americas tournament–with Brazil and Canada joining the United States–will be held in the United States May 24-27 at a site to be determined.
