FINA Water Polo Developmental Trophy, Day 3

KUWAIT City, Kuwait, March 9. IN the battle for Group A supremacy halfway through the FINA Water Polo Development Trophy, the Saudi Arabians took a 1-0 lead over Egypt after the first period. The Egyptians took over in the second quarter, scoring five unanswered goals for a 5-1 halftime lead. The Saudis were able to cut their deficit to three in the second half, but the Egyptians proved too strong and wound up with a 10-5 victory and the top spot in Group A.

Uruguay and Singapore met to determine which team would move into a tie for second place in the Group A standings. Uruguay took a 2-1 first quarter lead, but the Singaporeans jumped ahead to a 4-3 advantage at the half. Uruguay regained control of the game, outscoring Singapore 5-2 in the third and 4-1 in the fourth for their 12-7 victory and a tie for second.

Peru grabbed a 2-1 first period lead against Tunisia and never looked back, ending with a final winning score of 10-2.

It was Puerto Rico's turn to rest, as Guatemala took on Uzbekistan and Kuwait met the South Africans. There was no contest in the Guatemala-Uzbekistan match, as 10 different players scored a total of 24 goals to just one for Guatemala.

Kuwait scored the first goal of their game with South Africa, which was quickly answered. Kuwait got the lead back just before halftime. South Africa took the lead 10-9 in the third period. However, Kuwait scored twice to end the period ahead 11-10. They extended their lead in the fourth quarter, 12-10, then hung on for their 13-12 victory. The Kuwait team is still in second place in Group B.

Among tomorrow's games will be a faceoff between the top-ranked Uzbekistan team and second-place Kuwait in Group B action.
