FINA Masters World Champs, Day 6: Japan’s Osaki, South Africa’s McCarney Break Decade-Old World Marks

By Peter Andersen

RICCIONE, Italy, June 8. SEVEN Masters world records, including two dating to the early 1990s, were broken on the sixth day of competition at the FINA Masters World Championships in Riccione, Italy. For the first time here, none of the day's record-setters were Americans.

in the 200 meter freestyle for women 65-69, Japanese Olympian Yoshiko Osaki broke Clara Walker's 1992 standard of 2:48.51 with her 2:47.24.

South Africa's Beverly McCarney broke a record that was almost that old.
Swimming in the women's 40-44 age group, she stroked a 31.99 for 50 meters backstroke, removing Laura Val's 1994 standard of 32.25 from the record book.

Other world marks set today:

50m backstroke
In the women's 60-64 age group, Japan's Satoko Takeuji carved 4-hundredths off her own 2002 mark when she hit the pads in 36.61 seconds.

Canada's J. Van Buuren scored his second world dorsal record for men 50-54 when he blazed 50 meters in 30.06 seconds, three-tenths under Casey Clafin's old standard set last year.

200m freestyle
In the women's 55-59 division, Peru's Rosario Vivanco touched in 2:31.34, more than two seconds faster than Fran Williamson's 2:33.60 from 2003.

South Africa's Terry Downes dipped under Tod Spieker's global standard for men 55-59 with his 2:10.90 effort. Spieker, who was second today, set the old mark of 2:11.66 last year.

In the 90-94 age group, Japan's Tokushi Komeda became the oldest man to swim under four minutes when he finished in 3:55.39. The time hacked some 15 seconds off the USA's Woody Bowersocks's 4:10.40 from last year.

200m mixed free relay
Two records at the opposite ends of the age spectrum were set in today's final event, the 200m mixed freestyle relay. In the 100-119 division, a Japanese team, Gold Rush, rushed to the gold in 1:43.75.

A Swedish team, Soik hellas, notched a world record in the 320-359 age group with a time of 2:52.02.
