FINA Marathon World Cup: Stoychev, Maurer Win the 50th Annual Crossing of Canada’s Lake St-Jean

ROBERVAL, Quebec, Canada, August 2. BULGARIAN Petar Stoychev won the 50th Traversée Internationale du Lac Saint-Jean in Canada on Saturday, the fourth consecutive year that the 29-year-old Bulgarian has won the 32km (20-mile) swim between Péribonka and Roberval. The race is the first of two Canadian legs of the FINA Marathon World Cup. It also marked Stoychev's third victory in the eight races sum thus far in the World Cup series, making him the favorite to take the overall crown.

Stoychev's time of six hours 23 minutes 14 seconds was almost six minutes ahead of Argentinian Gabriel Chaillou and France's Stephane Gomez.

Germany's Angela Maurer won the women's race in 6:47:04 while her teammate, triple European champion Britta Kamrau was a ditant second, four minutes 43 seconds off the pace. Like Stoychev, Kamrau notched her third triumph this year in the World Cup, boosting her into the favorite's spot to win the 2004 overall title.

The next raace in the series is the 40-km. (25-mile) Traversée Internationale du Lac Magog in Canada.
