FINA Announces Candidates for 2009 World Championships

LAUSANNE, SUI, February 16. FINA announced yesterday the Cities/National Federations that have submitted their formal bids, by the February 1, 2005 deadline, for the 13th FINA World Championships in 2009.

Five cities/federations were confirmed as candidates: Athens (GRE), Dubai (UAE)(host of the most recent Open Water FINA World Championship), Japan (city to be determined), Moscow (RUS), and Rome (ITA).

Interestingly, all have been host of previous Olympics and/or FINA World Championship events.

The FINA Bureau will select the City/National Federation hosting these Championships on 16th July 2005 at its meeting to be held in conjunction with the 11th FINA World Championships in Montreal (CAN).
