Meet Records In Jeopardy In Day Two Prelims Of 2016 Easterns

Day two of the 2016 Eastern Interscholastic Swimming and Diving Championships continued with numerous swimmers posting swift swims during prelims.

Karlee Carminati of Germantown doled out a time of 4:52.72 to claim the first place seed in the women’s 500 free. She leads tonight’s finals by a stunning thirteen seconds. Mercersburg Stephanie Downing returns as second with a 5:05.68, while third goes to Episcopal’s Hadley DeBruyn (5:07.31).

Penn Charter’s Reece Whitley delivered a scorching 53.11 in the men’s 100 breaststroke, lowering his own meet record from 53.66. Whitley, who appeared shocked upon seeing the time, sits a slim .19 seconds off the National Prep record of 52.92 set by Jacob Molacek in 2014.

Lindsay Tanner of Mercersburg leads the women’s 100 free coming back in tonight’s final heat. She posted a 51.39 over Peddie teammates Vanessa Ruiz (51.67) and Nika Blank (51.76).

Close field in the men’s 100 free with the top three qualifiers posting prelims times within .57 seconds of each other. Ryan Torie of Springside Chestnut Hill claimed the top spot with a time of 45.20. The Hill School’s Alberto Mestre posted a 45.35 to qualify second, while Peddie’s Jared Fitzgerald was third with a 45.77.

Episcopal’s Alex Sumner dashed to a quick 54.60 in the women’s 100 back. Teresa Crippen holds the meet record at a 54.16 from 2008, so it’s possible that Sumner could claim her first meet record.

Alex Boratto of Haverford turned in a quick 49.77 to finish first in the men’s 100 back. His original seed time of 48.91 is under Tim Wynter’s 2014 meet record of 49.08 bringing the possibility of a new meet record into play.

Sally Stockett of Episcopal posted a final time of 1:05.03 to grab the top seed in the women’s 100 breaststroke. She sits just ahead of teammate Sarah Baturka and her time of 1:05.09. Mercersburg’s Courtney Levins rounded out the top three with a time of 1:05.30.
