EXCLUSIVE: Touretski To Be Suspended After Police Discover Steroids

CANBERRA, April 10. GENNADI TOURETSKI, 51, coach of Olympic stars Alex Popov and Michael Klim will be suspended from the Australian Institute of Sport today after police reportedly found a small quantity of illegal anabolic steroids in the famed coach's home, according to informed sources. The announcement of Touretski's suspension, with pay, will be made later today at a press conference at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra.

Coach Touretski reportedly will deny the allegation against him when the case is considered in court.

Just one week ago, thieves broke into Touretski's home in Bruce, a suburb of Canberra, while he and his wife, Inna, were at the airport meeting a friend. The thieves stole a safe containing Olympic medals presented to the coach by Alex Popov and other swimmers he has coached.

The safe–and the medals–were later recovered in a dam and returned to the coach. Allegedly, during the course of their investigation, police accidentally discovered the banned drugs.

The Australian Institute of Sport, where Touretski has worked since leaving Moscow, is arguably the most vigorous agency in the world in conducting drug-testing.
