EXCLUSIVE! Moses to Appear on CBS’s “Super Stars”

By Phillip Whitten

KINGSTON, Jamaica, March 31. JUST like his namesake, Moses, Ed Moses led his Chosen People – swimmers — out of the wilderness and into the Promised Land. What’s more, you can see it all on TV next weekend.

Last year, Lenny Krayzelburg was invited to participate in CBS’s “MetRx SuperStars” competition. Lenny showed up, smiled and… well, let’s just say that Lenny was there. Even in basketball, which Lenny played in high school, the triple Olympic gold medalist was less than golden. We love Lenny, so let’s note only that Lenny’s performance gave credence to the notion that aquatic athletes and land-based athletes are actually members of two different sub-species. (On the other hand, my man Lenny made great showings on “Who Wants To Be a Millionaire?” and, more recently, “Pyramid.”)

Reportedly, CBS decided not to invite any swimmers this year. Apparently, though, at the last minute, one participant dropped out and the producers decided to take a chance and go with another swimmer.

Who you gonna’ call? No, not Ghostbusters. You call in the Big Guy… MOSES!

“I was invited only a week before the competition,” Moses told SwimInfo, “and it was a tough decision. On the one hand, it was very close to Nationals and I didn’t want to risk getting injured. On the other hand, it was a huge opportunity – both for me and swimming – to gain visibility. And there were a few bucks in it.”

The pick-seven-out-of-ten events contest, involving ten star athletes, was held two weeks ago in Jamaica and, said Ed, “I had a great time.”

It will air on CBS next Saturday and Sunday, April 5 and 6. Check your local listings for the time it will be shown in your area.

“I can’t disclose exactly how I did,” said Ed, “but I didn’t do that badly. I think swimmers will be pleased.”

Ed did share that he competed in the wall climb, half mile run, 1.5 mile bike, kayak, slalom (on jet skis), basketball and obstacle course. “I was not allowed to swim, and I skipped weight-lifting and the 100 yard dash,” he said.

SwimInfo was able to learn from another source exactly how Ed did, but we’re going to leave it for you to find out when you watch the show. I would suggest, however, that you be glued in front of the tube during the… basketball! Watch Ed soar over those NFL linemen, dribble like Tracy McGrady and shoot like Kobe.

Beautiful!
