Evie Pfeifer came to the Irish Open as part of the NCSA All-America squad with a goal of lowering her lifetime best in the 400 individual medley to get a better seed at next year’s Olympic Trials. She didn’t expect to swim fast enough in the 200 free in Ireland to earn the privilege of swimming that event in Omaha next year, but that’s what the 16-year-old did on the first day of the meet.

In this video interview with Swimming World’s Jeff Commings, Pfeifer talked about that swim in the 200 free B final in which she was racing the clock. She said she was able to “self-motivate” for the swim, and it turned out well. She also talked about her 400 IM, where she already had the Olympic Trials cut by one hundredth of a second and what she will work on to get faster this summer.
