GUARATINGUETA, Brazil, September 4. ETIENE Medeiros had herself a strong day in the sprint backstroke at the short course Jose Finkel Trophy meet in Brazil.

Medeiros lowered her South American record for the second time today in the women’s 50-meter back. After clocking a 26.58 this morning, she hit the wall in 26.41 this evening. Her time this evening would have ranked her third in the world a year ago, up from her sixth-ranked 26.61 from the Tokyo stop of the FINA World Cup. Natalia De Luccas (27.97) and Andrea Berrino (28.22) finished second and third.

Moniek Nijhuis took a run at her Dutch record of 1:04.56 in the women’s 100-meter breast with a winning time of 1:40.91. That’s better than her seventh-ranked season best of 1:04.92 from a year ago, and she’s still just getting started in the short course season this year. Ana Carvalho placed second in 1:07.14 with Julia Sebastian earning third in 1:07.24.

Felipe Silva demolished the field in the men’s 100-meter breaststroke tonight in 56.34. That’s a bit off his South American record of 56.25 set this morning during prelims. Felipe Lima placed second in 58.04, while Joao Gomes Jr. wound up third in 58.36.

After leading prelims this morning with a 1:53.11, Leonardo de Deus returned tonight in the men’s 200-meter fly with a 1:53.12 for the win. Lucas Salatta placed second in 1:53.75 with Frederico De Castro rounding out the podium with a 1:56.06.

This morning, Daiene Dias topped the women’s 200-meter fly with a 2:10.92, but she could not replicate that type of speed this evening as she took fifth overall in 2:13.12. Giovanna Diamonte won in 2:11.11 with Manuella Lyrio earning second in 2:11.59. Yana Medeiros placed third in 2:12.46.

Guilherme Guido popped a 23.46 to win the men’s 50-meter backstroke finale. That’s just half-a-second off his South American mark of 23.18 from 2012. Fabio Santi took second in 24.03 with Daniel Orzechowski finishing third in 24.05.

Miguel Valente closed out the night with a 7:44.84 to win the men’s 800-meter free. Brandonn Pierry finished second in 7:49.94 with Lucas Kanieski earning third in 7:51.40.
