Erik Vendt Wins Three at USC Intra-Squad Meet

LOS ANGELES, October 18. TWO first-place finishes each by senior co-captain Jeff Lee and freshman Ous Mellouli paved the way for a Gold victory over the Cardinal as the 2002-2003 USC men's and women's swimming and diving teams kicked off the season with the exhibition intrasquad meet.

The gold team held off the charging cardinal squad, 137.5 to 117.5, and earned a barbeque meal, compliments of their red-hue clad teammates.

This despite the Cardinal team earning the coveted spirit points (10) handed out by Coach Mark Schubert.

Lee won both the 50y free and the 100y fly while Mellouli took the 100y and 200y free. Other gold winners included senior Jennifer Parmenter (50y free),
sophomore Paul Fahey (200y IM), freshman Stacy Vazhenin (200y back) and freshman Margie Pedder (500y free). The gold also got a boost from junior diver Nicci Fusaro, who earned a pair of wins on the springboard.

Senior co-captain Erik Vendt was the day's only three-time winner, claiming firsts in the 500y and 1000y free and in the 200y breast for the Cardinal team. Senior co-captain Asa Sandlund won the women's 1000y free while junior Jana Krohn took both the 100y and 200y free. Sophomore Kaitlin Sandeno won both the 200y IM and the 200y fly, junior Trent Staley won the 200y back and freshman Kammy Miller won the 200y breast.

USC opens the regular season on Nov. 1 and 2 when the team travels to Austin to face Texas.
