Emily McClellan Clears ‘A’ Cut, Samantha Corea Doubles At Hawkeye Invite

IOWA CITY, Iowa, December 8. AFTER another strong day in the pool which included multiple victories, the Notre Dame swimming and diving teams extended their leads in the team standings during the second day of racing at the Hawkeye Invitational. UW-Milwaukee’s Emily McClellan posted the first A cut of the meet in the women’s 100 breast, breaking the meet and pool record with a time of 58.76. Denver’s Samantha Corea picked up a duo of victories, winning both the 100 fly (52.72) and 100 back (53.44) in NCAA B cuts.

The University of Iowa women’s swimming and diving team finished competition Saturday of the annual Hawkeye Invitational, remaining in fourth place after two days of intense racing.

The Hawkeyes (311.5 points) trail third-place Nebraska (317) by five-and-half points heading into the final day of competition. Iowa leads Denver (278), Washington State (278), and Milwaukee (171), while trailing Notre Dame (552) and Boise State (269.5).

“There was a lot of great efforts and great racing today,” said UI head coach Marc Long. “We had a lot of good energy and are ahead of our times from last year where we went on to break so many school records at Big Tens.”

Sophomore Olivia Kabacinski and senior Karolina Wartalowicz paced Iowa, as each recorded NCAA `B’ cut times.

Kabacinski recorded the first `B’ cut for the women this season when she touched out in 1:01.65 during prelims of the 100-breast to qualify for the “A” final of the event. She went on to take eighth overall, finishing the final in 1:03.45.

Wartalowicz posted the second `B’ cut time in the event, touching out in 1:02.06 during morning prelims. She finished fourth with a time of 1:02.24, while freshman Emma Sougstad rounded out the scoring for the women, taking sixth in the final (1:02.88).

Kabacinski and senior Lindsay Seemann finished second and third, respectively, in the 200-freestyle. Kabacinski’s time of 1:48.77 is a season-best for the Hawkeyes, while Seemann finished third in 1:03.45.
The 200-medley relay team of junior Audrey Kumm, Sougstad, senior Haley Gordon, and senior Elise Borja took sixth in the finals, finishing in 1:42.15. In the 800-free relay, the quartet of Kabacinski, Seemann, freshman Serena Wanasek, and junior Becky Stoughton touched out in third in 7:20.52.

Redshirt junior Abby Grilli continued a strong invite with a fifth-place showing on the 3-meter springboard. Grilli finished the finals with a score of 312.00, while her prelim score of 319.05 is a new season-best.
The Hawkeyes return to action Sunday morning at 10 a.m. for prelims.

The University of Iowa men’s swimming and diving team wrapped up day two of the Hawkeye Invitational with 602 points, putting them in second place.

The Hawkeyes swam to seven NCAA `B’ cuts on the day to put them squarely ahead of Denver (439) and Milwaukee, while trailing only Notre Dame (870).

Junior Grant Betulius and senior Dustin Rhoads put on the best effort of the evening in the 100 back, finishing 1-2 in the event. Betulius’ time of 47.04 was a season-best and NCAA `B’ cut. Rhoads posted a `B’ cut time of his own in the event, finishing in 47.31. This marked the second B cut time for Rhoads in the event, while Betulius earned his first `B’ cut of the season.

The Hawkeye relays put forth strong efforts, finishing second in the 200-medley relay, while taking third and fifth in the 800-free relay. The 200 medley time (1:27.29), posted by the quartet of Betulius, sophomore Roman Trussov, Rhoads, and sophomore David Ernstsson, was the fourth-fastest in school history.

In the 800 free relay, the final event of the day, seniors Gianni Sesto and Manuel Belzer, freshman Kyle Gannon and Betulius raced to third (6:37.45), while the relay of sophomore Quillan Oak, freshman Jackson Halsmer, senior Max Behles, and freshman Brandon Farnum touched out in 6:46.24 to take fifth.

Iowa posted a 2-4-6 finish in the 100-breast with all three times qualifying for NCAA `B’ cuts. Senior Andrew Marciniak took second with a time of 53.59, Trussov was fourth in 53.92, and Oak rounded out the A finals scoring with a sixth-place time of 54.31. Marciniak and Oak posted their first `B’ cut times of the season, while Trussov bested his previous `B’ cut in the event. For Marciniak, he ties his own school record in the event, which he set last season.

The Hawkeyes rounded out the `B’ cuts with senior Tyler Lentz finishing fourth in the 400 IM (3:52.70), and with Ernstsson finishing in 1:37.28 during the 200-free qualifying.

Iowa concludes the three-day event Sunday morning, beginning at 10 a.m. (CT).
