Eastern Michigan Topples Wayne State (M: 145-87; W: 134-97)

YPSILANTI, Michigan, October 19. THE Eastern Michigan University men's and women's swimming and diving teams picked up their first victories of the season against Wayne State. The men won 145-87, while the women defeated the Warriors with a 134-97 score.

The men had the top time in every event, even after the meet went to exhibition scoring. The foursome of Mark Kurtzer, Donald Ellison, Ryan Fulkerson and Andrzej Olesinksi captured the meet's first event, the 400 medley relay. Ellison also won the 200 IM, while taking the top time in the 200 breaststroke. Fulkerson captured the 200 butterfly, while Kurtzer won the 200 backstroke. Derick Roe won the 50 and 100 freestyle, while teammates Dan Kish (1000 freestyle) and Steven Bowling (200 and 500 freestyle) came away with victories on the evening.

For the women, the 400 medley relay team of Madeleine Pilchard, Ashley Durand, Sheila Carson and Catherine Lee Ha started the meet off with a victory. Pilchard went on to win the 500 freestyle race as well. Lee Ha captured the 50 freestyle, while Carson came away with a victory in the 200 IM. Freshmen Erin Rhoades (1000 freestyle) and Sarah Kowalski (100 freestyle) picked up their first collegiate victories. Senior Becky Renkola placed first in the one-meter dive, while Leeza Moser won the 200 backstroke.
