East Coast Club Championships: Colorado Leads Both Men’s, Women’s Team Races

ATLANTA, Georgia, April 1. THE 2011 East Coast Swim Club Championship began Friday night at the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center in Atlanta, Georgia.

The Colorado Buffaloes got off to a fast start by winning both the Men and Women's 4×200 Yard Freestyle relays, smashing the both meet records with their swims. Stephanie Capizzi of University of Central Florida won the first individual events of the evening by posting a 4:55.27 in the 400 yard individual medley. Andrew Carlson followed with a victory for Georgia State University in the men's 400 IM. Colorado's Lauren Fowler crushed the 200 yard backstroke meet record by more than 6 seconds, giving the first individual gold for the Buffaloes. The men's 200 yard backstroke had 7 men break the old meet record, with George Ramsey of UNC Chapel Hill taking the gold with a time of 1:54.33.

Georgia State's Sarah Porri broke her own meet record set last year while winning gold in the 200 yard butterfly, and Joe Sagginario of Rhode Island snatched a gold and a meet record for the Rams. UCF's Stefanie Capizzi claimed her second individual gold in the 200 breaststroke, while 2010's Most Valuable Male Swimmer Yousuf Alyousuf from Indiana set a new meet record while winning his first individual gold in the 200 breast. Sarah Porri from Georgia State took home her second individual gold in the 500 yard freestyle while breaking a 5 year old meet record, and Bruce Deakyne of Colorado gave the Buffaloes' their 4th gold of the day in a record setting swim in the 500 freestyle.

Day 1 of the 2011 East Coast Swim Club Championships concluded with two more record-breaking performances. Colorado took their third relay gold by winning the 400 yard medley relay with a time of 4:08.89, and the home team Georgia Tech claims their first gold in 2011 with a record breaking 3:24.51. In all, 11 meet records were broken in day 1 of meet. Day 2 and 3 of the meet will sure to bring more record-breaking performances in this record breaking meet.

Women's: Colorado 240, James Madison 123, UNC Chapel Hill 116, Mizzou 95, Florida 91.50.

Men's: Colorado 204, Rhode Island 175, Indiana 143, Mizzou 114, Georgia Tech 114.

Combined: Colorado 444, Mizzou 209, Indiana 204, Florida 191.5, UNC Chapel Hill 180.
