East Beats West in Canadian Youth Dual Meet

WINNIPEG, Canada, July 30. JOHN Fauteux of Waterloo, Ont., earned three individual victories on Wednesday night at the Pan Am Pool to lead Team East to victory over Team West to conclude the inaugural Youth Dual Meet swimming competition.

The competition targets Canada’s top youth and prospect age swimmers. The youth age for the boys is 16-17 and prospects 15 and under. For the girls it’s 15-16 and 14 and under. Swimmers earn points for their team for each individual race with points doubled for relays.

The East entered Wednesday’s race with a 66 point lead and withstood four medal sweeps for the West on Thursday to finish with 1,097 points to 988 for Team West. The East took 13 of the boys 18 races and 22 of 34 overall. At one point, Team East swimmers won 12 of 13 races.

Fauteux posted wins in the 100-m breaststroke, 50-m freestyle and 100-m individual medley in the 16-17 age group. Paul Zou of Delta, B.C., and Javier Acevedo of Ajax, Ont., were both double winners on the boys side.

For the girls, Kayla Sanchez of Ajax, Ont., and Margaret MacNeil London, Ont., both collected two individual wins for the East.

The Youth Dual Meet came on the heels of the Canadian Age Group Championships which were held last Wednesday to Monday in Winnipeg. The two competitions meant as much as eight days of straight racing for some swimmers.

‘’There was a lot of heavy breathing after the races,’’ said Swimming Canada’s national junior coach Ken McKinnon. ‘’Some swimmers swam between 8-14 events at this meet and four to seven events within a three hour time frame. They never stopped racing and handled it really well.’’

The competition, which concluded the 2013-14 season for many entries, was also a short course event which McKinnon feels was beneficial.

‘’It brought renewed excitement for the swimmers because it was a different format from the age groups,’’ said McKinnon. ‘’A lot of swimmers established new short course personal bests which means when the new season starts this fall they are really going to have to really train hard and step it up beat those times.’’
