Easop Lee Doubles in 400 Free, 200 Fly at Indianapolis Sectionals

INDIANAPOLIS – North Baltimore Aquatic Club’s Easop Lee won the women’s 400 free and 200 fly, while Aqua Swim Club’s Devon Nowicki set a meet record in the men’s 100 breast to highlight night three of the Indianapolis Sectionals meet at the IUPUI Natatorium.

SwimMAC Carolina’s Kathleen Baker raced to a win in the opening event, clocking a 1:01.74 to win the women’s 100 back by about half a second over Waves Bloomington’s Grace Ariola (1:02.23). Hopkins Mariner’s Erin Earley stopped the clock .01 behind Ariola to finish third in 1:02.24.

In one of the most exciting finishes of the meet so far, the men’s 100 back final came down to the final touch as three swimmers were within .07 of each other. Firestone Akron’s Michael Reilman led the way in 56.51, with New Trier’s Jonathan Grodecki right behind in 56.57. Ryan Gordon of Indiana University clocked in at 56.58 to take third.

North Baltimore’s Easop Lee added a second win in the women’s 400 free to her victory in the 200 free last night with a 4:16.02 in finals, only .07 in front of Waves Bloomington’s Melissa Pish (4:16.08). Ohio State’s Alexandra Norris, the top seed after prelims, came in third with a 4:17.08.

Ethan Curl of Indiana University cleared 4:00 to win the men’s 400 free convincingly over teammate Timothy Martin, 3:58.55 to 4:00.94. North Baltimore’s Kaan Ozcan took third in 4:00.99.

Livonia Community’s Miranda Tucker made it a sweep of the breaststroke events in Indy, posting a 1:09.11 to dominate the 100 breast. SwimMAC Carolina grabbed the next two spots on the podium, with Caroline Hauder (1:11.40) and Sara Stranick (1:12.70) taking second and third.

Aqua Swim Club’s Devon Nowicki lowered the meet record in the men’s 100 breast final, putting up a 1:01.96 to erase Kevin Swander’s 1:02.21 from 2008 from the books. Grosse Pointe’s Jacob Montague nearly broke the record as well with a 1:02.60, while Indiana University’s Marijn Van Zundert placed third in 1:03.77.

North Baltimore’s Easop Lee doubled up on the night with a 2:14.67 in the women’s 200 fly, overtaking Indiana University’s Reagan Cook (2:15.18) on the final 50 for the win. Fishers Area’s Lauren Edelman dropped just over a tenth from prelims and took third in 2:16.59.

North Baltimore went 1-2 in the men’s 200 fly final, as William Buese and Kaan Ozcan put up times of 2:01.82 and 2:02.89, respectively. Michiana Stars’ Bowen Anderson gave his team its first top three finish of the meet with a 2:04.49.

North Baltimore’s foursome of Daniel Golczewski, Jason Ewart, Kaan Ozcan and William Buese topped the men’s 800 free relay in 7:39.03, three seconds in front of SwimMAC Carolina’s Evan Heldman, Graham Weaver, Nathaniel Murray and John Poff (7:42.81). North Baltimore’s B squad of William Cadigan, Atalay Onol, Samet Alkan and Coleman Stewart claimed third in 7:44.10.

SwimMAC Carolina remains in the lead in the team race with 1,536 points, about 200 in front of North Baltimore (1,312). Indiana University is a distant third with 587 points.
