Dutch Short Course Championships: Final Day Features Relay National Record, Marleen Veldhuis Doubles

AMSTERDAM, The Netherlands, December 5. THE Dutch Short Course Championships came to a close with one more Dutch record falling by the wayside as well as Marleen Veldhuis accounting for a pair of gold medals.

Bas van Velthoven, Joeri Verlinden, Lennart Stekelenburg and Joost Reijns set a Dutch record in the men's 400 medley relay with a time of 3:32.67. That swim clipped the 2008 national mark of 3:32.78.

Veldhuis topped the women's 100 free in 53.41 to move to 13th in the world rankings. Maud van de Meer touched second in 54.26, while Ilse Kraayeveld wound up third in 54.38. Veldhuis doubled up with a 26.01 to win the women's 50 fly and jump to 14th in the world. Lotte Goosen (26.99) and Willemijn Knot (27.10) completed the podium.

Lennart Stekelenburg downed the meet record in the men's 50 breast with a time of 26.85. That swim moved him up to 13th in the world rankings. Timon Evenhuis placed second in 27.69, while Damien Bernard grabbed third in 27.75.

Tessa Bouwer topped the women's 50 breast in 30.97, just short of her ninth-ranked season best of 30.71 set at the European Short Course Championships. Eline Boers (31.36) and Loes Zanderink (31.72) made up the rest of the podium.

Sharon van Rouwendaal lowered the Dutch National Age Group record for 17 year olds in the women's 400 IM with a time of 4:37.45. That swim pushed her to 21st in the world rankings. Judith Stap took second in 4:49.25, while Lisa Dreesens picked up third in 4:49.50.

Job Kienhuis grabbed the men's 1500 free triumph in 14:49.49, finishing short of his third-ranked season best of 14:40.11 set at the Berlin stop of the World Cup. Arjen van der Meulen took second in 15:06.96, while Ferry Weertman earned third in 15:37.51.

Stefan de Die won the men's 100 free in 48.75, touching out Pieter Timmers (48.76) by the slimmest of margins. Joost Reijns finished third in 48.87. Bastiaan Lijesen snared the men's 100 back title in 52.67. Jurjen Willemsen (53.15) and Sverre Eschweiler (54.74) rounded out the top three.

Wendy van der Zanden grabbed the women's 100 back in 59.66, while Kira Toussaint finished second in 1:00.85. Kimberley Albers took third in 1:01.61. Joeri Verlinden clinched the men's 50 fly title in 23.41, while Tim van Deutekom (24.03) and Damien Bernard (24.17) finished second and third.

Maud van de Meer, Marieke Nijhuis, Clarissa van Rheenen and Wendy van der Zanden won the women's 800 free relay in 8:03.83 to close down the meet.
