Durban, South Africa Looking to Bid on 2024 Summer Olympic, Paralympic Games

DURBAN, South Africa, September 14. SOUTH Africa is considering a run at hosting the 2024 Summer Olympic, Paralympic Games with Durban as its target host city, according to James Crook of Inside The Games.

Crook reports that while the government has not officially decided to make a bid, it does believe that the city is prepared to handle such hosting duties.

“The sport economy is one of the major fundamentals for the country,” said spokesman Paena Galane. “We continue to attract major events, and are attractive to the world after hosting world events like the FIFA World Cup [in 2010]. Interestingly, Sport Minister Fikile Mbalula is in Argentina attending the World Anti-Doping Agency executive meeting on the sidelines of the International Olympic Committee [IOC] Session, where delegates, after the announcement of Tokyo [as host city of the 2020 Games], spoke of Durban as the preferred destination.”

We know one thing, the swimming part of the equation would have some serious backing with Princess Charlene of Monaco already committing to helping the sport in her hometown with a “large” donation as the South African Olympian continues her philanthropic efforts on behalf of her favored sport.

As Crook reports, 2024 is shaping up to be a fun battle for hosting duties with Italy already voicing its desire to get in the ring and the United States currently having conversations regarding multiple potential cities vying for the honor.
