Drexel, Northeastern vs. Delaware

NEWARK, Delaware, January 14. THE University of Delaware men's and women's swimming and diving teams returned home for the first time since October Saturday and the Blue Hens had mixed results in their matchup with Colonial Athletic Association foes Drexel and Northeastern at Rawstrom Natatorium.
The Delaware men (4-3, 1-3 CAA) captured 15 first place finishes to post an easy 214-86 victory over Drexel while the Blue Hen women (5-3, 2-3 CAA), who won nine events on the day, split their two duals, defeating Drexel 231-56 but falling to?Northeastern by a narrow 151-149 margin. Northeastern does not sponsor a men's team.

The women's race came down to the final event of the day with the? Huskies pulling out the win with second and third place finish in the 400 freestyle relay. Delaware won the race but needed a second relay group to place second or third instead of fourth to have enough points to win the decision. It marked the second straight year that Delaware fell to Northeastern in the final event of the meet. Last season the Huskies edged our the Hens for a 151-148 victory in Boston.

On the men's side, senior Josh?Hyman and Ryan Roberts were each part of four first place finishes on the afternoon. Hyman won the 100 breaststroke (58.52), 200 breaststroke (2:08.18), and 200 individual medley (1:57.25) events and teamed with Roberts, Cole Clark, and Paul Gallagher to win the 200 medley relay (1:33.80). Roberts also won the 200 freestyle (1:42.08) and 200 backstroke (1:51.34) and teamed with Gallagher, Kyle McLaughlin, and Matthew Marquez to win the 400 freestyle relay (3:11.24).

Marquez also captured the 500 freestyle (4:50.47) and 1,000 freestyle (9:55.27) events while Gallagher also won the 50 freestyle (21.46), McLaughlin won the 100 freestyle (47.69), and diver Brian Coonce captured both the 1-meter (276.10) and 3-meter (301.0) diving events. Other Delaware first place finishers were Matthew McCarthy in the 100 backstroke (51.95) and Zachary Lowe in the 200 butterfly (1:53.45).

In the women's race, Maggie Tracy led the way by winning four events for the Blue Hens. She captured both the 50 freestyle (24.71) and 100 freestyle (54.00) and teamed with Courtney Raw, Hannah Facchine, and Tori Gillespie to win the 200 medley relay (1:46.73) and with Gillespie, Aubrey Caldwell, and Mary Kay Harris to win the 400 freestyle relay (3:33.76). The winning 200 medley relay team's time set a new Rawstrom Pool record.

Facchine also won the 100 breaststroke (1:05.80) and 200 breaststroke (2:21.87) races while Raw won the 100 backstroke (57.04) and Gillespie captured the 100 butterfly (57.84). Also taking home a first place finish for Delaware was Shea Solt in the 1,000 freestyle (10:30.88).

Delaware will return to action Jan. 25 when the Blue Hens host Widener at 6 p.m.
