Dozen Stanford Swimmers Headed to World Trials in July

STANFORD, California, July 2. A dozen Stanford swimmers will head to the U.S. World Championship Trials in Indianapolis starting on July 7 with hopes to continue onto Rome for the World Championships starting on July 18.

Headlining the group of Cardinal is 19-time All-American, Olympian and two-time NCAA record holder, Julia Smit, who earned seven certificates this past year. Smit, is already the school's record holder in the 50 and 100 freestyle, setting the NCAA mark for the 200 and 400 individual medleys as well last season. Smit is ranked in Stanford's top-10, eight times, and just outside the top-10 with those 19 certificates.

Another senior-to-be, Elaine Breeden, was named an All-American six times last year, upping her total to 18 in three seasons. In the process, the 2008 Olympian set the NCAA record in the 200 butterfly and also scored Stanford's top mark in the 100 butterfly.

Kate Dwelley, the school-record holder in the 200 freestyle and a nine-time All-American will be in Indy, as will four freshmen. One of those freshmen from last season is five-time All-American Sam Woodward, who already has top-five times at Stanford in the 50 and 100 freestyle.

In order to move onto the World Championships, swimmers must finish in the top six in either the 100 or 200 freestyles, or top-two in the other disciplines.
