Don’t Mess With Texas! Horns Hook Their 3rd Straight Men’s NCAA Title

By Phillip Whitten

ATHENS, Georgia, March 30. IT'S all over but the hootin', hollerin' and dunkin'. Coach Eddie Reese have pulled off their third straight NCAA men's swimming and diving title.

And don't forget the diving in that title, pardner. The Horns outscored Stanford by more than 100 points in diving to notch their razor-thin 11 point victory.

To their great credit, Stanford went down fighting. Hard!

After the 3-m diving — the penultimate event —
Texas had a 13-point lead. In order to win, Stanford had to win the 400 free relay, and Texas had to finish sixth, seventh or eighth. That would not be easy, as Stanford was in lane 8 — barely sneaking in to th eighth qualifying spot.

As for the Horns, they held their destiny in their own chlorine-soaked hands. Finish fifth or better and it didn't matter what Stanford did.

Both teams outdid themselves.

Cal and Stanford tied for the lead on the first leg, as Duje Draganja and Randy Bal led off in identical 43.15s. Texas' Chris Kemp put his team in third with his 43.54.

Cal followed with Anthony Ervin, newly-crowned American record-holder, while Stanford also went to its big gun, Peter Marshall. Ervin split (ho, hum) a 41.43, while Marshall recorded a 42.64. So Stanford trailed by 1.21 seconds at the halfway mark. But three teams passed Texas, and at 200 yards, the Horns were sixth. There was a chance…

But Cal's Matt Macedo dug Stanford's hole a little bit deeper with a brilliant 42.44 third leg, 57-hundredths faster than Stanford's Bobby O'Bryan, who was second faster. Meanwhile, Texas fell to seventh.

Cal's anchor, Matthias Ohlin was the "weak leg" for the Bears. If Stanford's Andrew Schnell could make up 1.78 seconds on the leader, and Texas could not climb out of its seventh-place pit, there was still a hope.

Alas, Ohlin had no intention of rolling over. The Swede split a terrific 42.99, as Schnell was not schnell enough; he went 42.83 to close the margin to 1.62 seconds at the wall. Meanwhile, the struggle up front became academic anyway, as Texas Ian Crocker turned in a 42.06 anchor for the Horns to boost them into third.

It was all over. Texas was the national champion.
Again.

Here's how it went btonight before that thrilling climax;

1650 yard freestyle
USC's Erik Vendt took the lead from his trojan teammate, Klete Keller, at the 400 yard mark, kept splitting 53-second 100s, and swam away with a hard-fought win in the 1650, touching in 14:37.48.

Harvard's John Cole swam a lifetime best 14:39.71 for second, actually out-swimming Vendt over the final 650 yards. minnesota's Justin Mortimer, swimming in an earlier heat, was third in 14:50.57, aseight men broke 15 minute.

The win was the secon of the meet for vendt who earlier took the 400 IM after finishing second in the 500 free.

200 yard backstroke
Stanford went one-two in the 200 back, with sophomore Markus Rogan winning in 1:41.14, just ahead of teammate Peter Marshall, t 1;41.85. Auburn's Kirk Hampleman came from behind to take the bronze.

100 yard freestyle
No more Mr. Nice Guy. Anthony Ervin is done with sharing. Anthony who tied Gary Hall Jr. for Olympic gold in the 50 free in 2000, tied Matt Biondi's 100 free record (41.80) in 2001, and tied Tom Jager's 50 free record (19.05) earlier this meet, is done with tying.

Tonight Anthony Ervin, a junior at Cal, wiped Biondi's name from the record book (at least for the 100), when he clocked a blistering 41.62, splitting 19.76 on his way. The time was exactly what Rowdy Gaines had predicted before the race.

Ervin's Cal teammate Duje Draganja was second in 42.22 — a tim that would have won this event almost any other year. Arizona's Roland Schoeman was third in 42.80, while Cal's Randall Bal was fourth in 42.80.
Matt Macedo added to Cal's dominance by placing secent in 43.69 (43.40p).

200 yard breaststroke
Texas sophomore Brendan Hansen had his eye on his own 200 breast record of 1:53.11 all year long, having wreted it away from Mike Barrowman last year. Tonight he went record-hunting and came up with a big trophy; the first sub-1:53 effort in history.

Hansen led all the way, splitting 25.27, 53.84 (!!), 1:2.06 and 1:52.88.

Stanford's Michael Bruce was a surprise second in 1:54.81 while Georgia's Kyle Salyards, a 2000 Olympian,
was third 91:55.67).

200 yard fly
The script was decidedly different in the 200 fly, as Alabama freshman Stefan Gherghel came from back in the pack to win an exciting — and surprisingly fast — race.

Texas freshman Rainer Kendrick took the race out hard, plitting 48.41 at the 100 and leading through the first six laps. Stanford frosh, Matt McDonald, the top qualifier, was second throughout those first 150 yards. Meanwhile, Gherghel, the patient Romanian, bided his time, turning sixth at the 50 and sixth at the 100. On the third 50, he moved up to fourth.

USC's Jeff Lee took the lead on the seventh lap, but coming home Gherghel ran him down to clinch the win. At the wall, it was Gherghel-1:42.68, Lee-:42.94 and Kendrick 1:43.56.

10-meter platform diving
Imre Lengyel, of Miami (Florida0 won the platforem diving event with east, scoring 620.25 points. Texas' justin Dumais was second with 577.5, followed by Auburn's Matt Bricker (565.85).

Troy Dumais finished fifth for Texas, Jonathan Linette was eighth and Harold Hyde 13th.

That set the stage for the relay… and Texas was champion again.
