Dolan defended his title in the men’s 400m individual medley and Kowal was a surprise winner in the women’s 100m breaststroke. Meanwhile, poor performances by Chinese swimmers fueled speculation that a seizure of illegal growth hormones by Australian Customs last week made for lackluster times.
