HANOVER, GERMANY – The Netherlands reeled of six consecutive goals en route to an 11-5 victory over the United States in the third place game at the Hanover Cup International Water Polo Tournament in Hanover, Germany. The loss left the USA a disappointing fourth. Yugoslavia defeated Germany 6-5 in the title game.

“The Netherlands came out very strong and aggressive today,” said USA coach John Vargas (Newport Beach, Calif.). “They pressured us into numerous mistakes and capitalized on them. Obviously we’re missing some key personnel, but that’s no excuse. The Dutch are good team and everyone seems to get up a little bit higher when they play the USA.”

On a positive note, Brad Schumacher (Bowie, Md./U of Pacific) and Wolf Wigo (New York, N.Y./Stanford) shared the tournament scoring title with Dirk Klingenberg (Germany) with nine goals each.

Team USA heads to Yugoslavia for the Becej Tournament, which runs Thursday through Sunday. The team returns to California on Monday and will depart for New York City and the Goodwill Games on Saturday, July 18.

Final Standings: 1. Yugoslavia 2. Germany 3. Netherlands 4. USA 5. Australia 6. Germany “B” 7. China
