DePauw Men, Trinity Women Take Home Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships

CRAWFORDSVILLE, Indiana, February 11. THE DePauw men's swimming and diving team established a conference record with 1,055 points and, in turn, claimed the largest margin of victory in winning its third straight Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference championship. The Trinity women's swimming and diving team totaled 934.5 points and won its fourth straight SCAC title.

On the men's side, Trinity finished second with 666 points followed by Centre with 639, Sewanee with 597 and Colorado College with 576. Hendrix placed sixth with 284 points followed by Rhodes (269), Austin (185) and Southwestern (7).

For the women, DePauw was the runner-up with 774.5 points, while Centre was third with 633.5 and Sewanee fourth with 537. Rhodes placed fifth with 481.5 points followed by Southwestern (339), Colorado College (323), Austin (236) and Hendrix (185).

DePauw's Rob Alexander was named the SCAC Male Swimmer of the Year after claiming firsts in the 50-yard freestyle, 100 butterfly and 100 free. His 50 and 100 free performances were NCAA automatic qualfiying times with the 100 time also establishing a conference record. His 100 fly time also was an NCAA provisional swim.

Centre's Dustin Schulten was named the SCAC Male Diver of the Year for the second straight year and third time in four years after winning the three-meter competition and placing second on the one-meter board.

In Saturday's competition, Centre's Will Jenkins won the 1650 free in 16:55.16 before DePauw's Brock Sishc took first in the 200 backstroke in 1:57.29. Alexander then won the 100 free in 45.37 and DePauw's Alex Trooxel won the 200 breaststroke in 2:11.54.

Trinity's Will Basinger finished first in the 200 butterfly in 1:57.45 and DePauw's 400 free relay of John Cook, Steve Klabak, Greg Nowak and Alexander won in an SCAC record and NCAA provisional time of 3:06.12.

DePauw's Katie Doogan was named the Female Swimmer of the Year for the second time in the last three years and Trinity's Lauren Walstad was named the Diver of the Year for the second consecutive year. Doogan won the 200- and 400-yard individual medley in SCAC record and NCAA provisional times in addition to taking the 200 backstroke title with a provisional time. Walstad captured both one- and three-meter diving titles and set SCAC records in both.

In Saturday's competition, DePauw's 200-yard freestyle relay of Cassie Enix, Amanda Stier, Doogan and Maddison Hamil won in 1:38.36 before Lindsay Weigley of Trinity won the 1,650 free in 18:17.17.

Doogan then won the 200 back in 2:08.66 before Rhodes' Jazzy Miller took first in the 100 free in 53.89. Southwestern's Alana Bergfield won the 200 breaststroke in a provisonal time of 2:27.23 and Stier won the 200 butterfly in 2:07.36 which set a conference record and was a provisional time.

Trinity's 400 free relay of Leta Gatton, Lauren Gann, Alison Gizinski and Weigley wrapped up the meet by winning in 3:37.02.
