Denver Swimming And Diving Earns Victories Over Mines, Colorado State And Nebraska-Omaha

DENVER, Colorado, October 19. The University of Denver men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams both earned victories on Saturday, as the women topped Colorado State and Nebraska-Omaha at home and the men defeated Colorado School of Mines on the road.

Both of the University of Denver swimming and diving teams won their competitions on Saturday, Oct. 18th. The men’s team competed against Mines (M) in Golden, while the women dueled CSU (W) and Omaha (W) at El Pomar Natatorium.

Ray Bornman stood out at the men’s meet against Mines winning and setting the pool record in the 200 Free (1:41.19). By leading off the 200 Freestyle Relay exhibition, he set the pool record going 21.15. Bornman went 50.82 in the 100 Fly exhibition, putting him tied for 2nd in the conference in the 100 Butterfly.

The men’s team broke 10 pool records at the CSM Natatorium, Dylan Bunch 1000 Free (9:38.21), Ray Bornman 200 Free (1:41.19), Jared Smith and Willy Van Dehy tied for the record in the 100 Back (52.52), Patrick Guillory 100 Breast (58.74), Andrew Torres 200 Fly (1:54.64), Anton Loncar 200 Back (1:52.39), Scott Bergstrom 500 Free (4:46.76), Andrew Torres 100 Fly (50.79), Ben Severino 200 IM (1:55.63), and Ray Bornman 50 Free (21.15).

Two more Pioneers broke records at the CSM Natatorium. Andrew Torres broke the CSM Natatorium 50 Fly record in his first 50 of the 100 Fly, while Patrick Guillory took his 100 Breast out under the 50 pool record time.

The women’s team won against CSU. All three teams dueled each other at El Pomar Natatorium. DU beat CSU and Summit League opponent Omaha.

Amanda Sanders helped DU win against CSU and Omaha. She took 2nd place vs. CSU, but 1st against Omaha in 50 Breast. Sanders is ranked top overall in the 200 Breast and is suggested to rise into 2nd overall in the 200 IM in the Summit League rankings, with a time of 2:07.54.

The University of Denver Diving revealed their strengths this weekend. Dana Gau got third overall against opponent CSU, yet won against Summit League opponent, Omaha in the 3 Meter event. Dana’s combined point total was 253.05.

“It was fun to get our meet season started with a home meet,” head diving coach Channing Kimball said. “I was happy to see the divers put into action several of the things we have been working on in practice. We are just at the beginning of the process right now, and I believe we are off to a solid start to have a great season.”

Both the women and men’s team will travel to Lawrence, Kans. for a two-day competition against KU and MSU, Friday, Oct. 24 thru Saturday, Oct. 25.

Colorado School of Mines Press Release

Colorado School of Mines men’s swimming contested its home-opener Saturday afternoon, falling 135-119 to NCAA Division I Denver at CSM Natatorium in Golden.

The Orediggers combined for five top-four times, including third-place results by freshman Patrick Giedeman and sophomore Josh Schechter, through the initial eight events.

Giedeman swam 1:57.18 in the 200 butterfly and Schechter 22.13 in the 50 freestyle.

Senior Zack Gertig claimed fourth in the 200 free (1:47.44), senior Zach Nahman fourth in the 100 backstroke (53.74) and freshman Kevin Olson fourth in the 100 breaststroke (1:02.70).

Sophomore Ethan Pfeiffer and freshman Brennan Mays were fastest among Mines swimmers in the 100 and 1000 free, touching fifth in 49.35 and 10:12.56, respectively.

Schechter was credited with the victory in the 100 fly in 52.68 as was Giedeman in the 200 IM (2:01.35) and Mays in the 500 free (4:59.26).

Senior Justin Dearden added a win in the 200 breast (2:18.42) and freshman Daniel Liu in the 200 back (2:02.53), while Pfeiffer, Gertig, sophomore Josh Graber and Schechter placed first in the 200 free relay in 1:28.72.

Mines resumes it season-opening string of meets against Division I foes next Friday, Oct. 24 as the men and women take part in the Air Force Duals at 5 p.m. at Cadet Natatorium in Colorado Springs.

Colorado State Press Release

The Colorado State swimming & diving team opened the 2014-15 season on Saturday, earning a split. The Rams defeated Nebraska Omaha and fell to host Denver.

The Rams began the meet in great position, winning the first two events behind first place finishes from Jessica Shepard (50 Backstroke; 26.50) and Cristina Bassani (50 Breaststroke; 29.35), respectively.

CSU also won the 50 Freestyle, with freshman Katie Kicklighter swimming to a time of 23.41 in her collegiate debut. The time was faster than any Ram swam the event during the 2013-14 season. Kicklighter, a High School All-American, also won the 100 Freestyle (51.60), while Shepard earned a second-place finish in the 200 Backstroke (2:06.27).

The Rams were extremely dominant on the boards, a trend that has carried over from last year. CSU went 1-2-3 on the 1-meter boards, with Mary Kate Hardy winning the event with a score of 255.20. Ariana Milone (254.35) and Erin Taylor (244.35) also placed, while Milone won the 3-meter event with a score of 298.88. Taylor, who was competing in her first collegiate meet, took second (257.55).

CSU will next compete on Friday against rival Wyoming. The home meet is an Orange Out.

Nebraska-Omaha Press Release

The Omaha swimming & diving team opened its road trip to Colorado on Saturday, facing Summit League peer Denver and non-conference foe Colorado State at El Pomar Natatorium in Denver. The Mavs finished 0-2 in the dual meet, loosing to Dever 211-71 and Colorado State 221.5-61.5.

Omaha came out winless in the 15 total events, but the Mavs posted six season-best times, led by sophomore Morgan Stepp, who bested her times in three events. Stepp finished third in 200 fly with a time of 2:08.33, took fourth in the 200 IM (2:10.31) and placed seventh in the 200 back (2:27.57).

Senior Jenna Foiles finished sixth in the 50 free, as the Albuquerque, N.M., native posted a season-best time of 24.94.

Junior Natalie Renshaw took third in the 100 free, clocking in a season-best time of 52.15.

Foiles, Renshaw and freshmen Calli Yancey and Cassie Jahn combined to put together a fourth-place showing in the 400 free relay. The quartet posted a season-best time (3:41.32) in the event.

Omaha continues its road trip in Colorado, as the Mavs return to action on Monday at Northern Colorado. The meet is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. from Butler-Hancock Pool in Greeley, Colo.
