Denver Relays

DENVER, Colorado, October 16. THE University of Denver men’s and women’s swimming teams each claimed first place at the Denver Relays in El Pomar Natatorium on Saturday afternoon.

“I’m extremely proud of both of our teams,” said head coach Brian Schrader. “We were able to do some good things today and I think we started the season out on a high note.”

The Pioneer men nabbed eight first-place finishes and two second-place times, while the women posted seven first-place finishes, two second-place times and one third-place finish. On the men’s side, Air Force placed second, followed by Wyoming and Mesa State. Wyoming finished in second place on the women’s side, followed by New Mexico and Air Force.

The DU women set the tone in the first event of the day, as the team of Katy Motsinger (Charleston, S.C.), Grace Kittle (Dallas, Texas), Hayley Ettelson (San Diego, Calif.) and Melissa Greeves (Melbourne, Australia) turned in a time of 1:45.47 to grab a first-place victory in the 200-yard medley relay.

On the men’s side, Kyle Milberg (Littleton, Colo.), Tanner Krall (Pueblo, Colo.), Scott Madaras (Yorktown, Va.) and Jay Giddens (Carlsbad, Calif.) finished with a winning time of 1:33.00, finishing nearly one second ahead of Air Force.

In the women’s 1500-yard 3×500 freestyle relay, the team of Jackie Leung (Gresham, Ore.), Kittle and Rachel Burns (Tampa, Fla.) placed first with a time of 15:23.61.

In the men’s 300 butterfly 3×100 relay, Jeff Cox (Alpharetta, Ga.), Madaras and Garth Summers (Portland, Ore.) grabbed first-place honors with a time of 2:30.74, finishing ahead of the pack by nearly three and a half seconds.

Denver rounded out the day with first-place finishes in the 400-yard freestyle relay. For the women, Kittle, Burns, Greeves and Michelle Needham (Portland, Ore.) claimed victory with a time of 3:30.94. On the men’s side, the team of Madaras, Milberg, Summers and Giddens rounded out the day with a first-place finish in the 400-yard freestyle relay, posting a time of 3:05.62.

Next, the Pioneers hit the road to face Utah on Oct. 29 and BYU on Oct. 30.
