Denver Pioneers Sweep Air Force

DENVER, Colorado. January 20. THE University of Denver swimming and diving teams defeated Air Force in dual meet competition this afternoon at El Pomar Natatorium. The women defeated the Falcons 136-89, while the men pulled out a 128-115 victory. The victory pushes the women's dual meet record to 10-1 on the season, while the men improve to 9-3 on the season.

"This was a great way for us to send our seniors out," head coach Jim Henry said. "It was a close meet and a total team effort. When it came down to it the team really supported each other whether it was in the pool or not. Everyone contributed today. This meet will definitely help prepare us for the upcoming conference championship."

The women jumped out to the early lead after the 200 medley relay and never looked back. The team of Kelsey Totura (Castle Rock, Colo.), Lauren Miranda (Louisville, Colo.), Karen Iverson (Littleton, Colo.) and Lauren Bortnowski (Houston, Texas) took first place with a time of 1:48.14. Caitlin Summers (Tigard, Ore.) showed her skills in the 1000-free taking first place with a time of 10:49.4, seven seconds ahead of teammate Meghan McNally (Lonetree, Colo.) who finished in second place with a time of 10:56.07. Totura added two more event titles to her tally by taking first place in the 200-free (1:53.69) and in the 100-back with a time of 57.52. Bortnowski continued her excellence in the sprint freestyle events, taking top honors in both the 50-free (24.72) and the 100-free (54.09). The Pioneers finished 1-2-3-4 in the 200-IM. Miranda took first place with a time of 2:11.98, Michele Lowry (Hailey, Idaho) took second place with a time of 2:13.80, Katie Conyers (Wheat Ridge, Colo.) took third place and Tessa O'Connell (Denver, Colo.) finished in fourth place. Summers also took the top spot in the 100-fly with a time of 59.89, edging out Air Force's Jane Hwang who took second place with a time of 59.92. By the end of the meet, Denver had won every single event.

The men's meet was close from start to finish. DU had the edge early with the team of Milos Marjanovic (Toronto, Ontario), Marcus Christianson (Hutchinson, Minn.), Chase Tipton (San Antonio, Texas) and Matt Diotte (Auburn, Wash) taking first place in the 200 medley relay.Air Force battled back going one-two in the 1000. The Falcons also took 200-free with Chris Daute, but Denver's Diotte took the top spot in the 50-free with a time of 21.18, edging out teammate Michael Peterson (Ames, Iowa) who took second place with a time of 21.35. Peterson took the top spot in the 100-free with a time of 46.63. Daniel Vollmer (Ajax, Ontario) showcased his skills in the 100-back taking the top spot with a time of 51.83. Christianson continued to dominate the breaststroke events taking top honors in the 100-breast with a time of 57.34. With the meet on the line, the team of Diotte, Peterson, Daniel Monsivais (El Paso, Texas) and Craig Jollands (Hillcrest, South Africa) took first place in the 200-free relay to earn the victory for the Pioneers. Paul Parmenter took the 200 I.M for the Falcons with a swift 1:54.91. Chris Knaute also took the 500 free for Air Force.

Diver Aaron Feight (Littleton, Colo.) had another excellent performance on the boards this afternoon. He tallied a sweep of the 1-meter and 3-meter boards with scores of 339.95 and 352.12. Kevin Haberman (Long Grove, Ill.) took fifth place on both boards with scores of 163.80 and 159.05. Hannah Duckett (Magnolia, Texas) took first place on the 1-meter with a score of 208.50, while Holly Watson (Sugar Land, Texas) took top honors on the 3-meter with a score of 225.40. Jordan Lance (Marion, Ind.) took sixth place on the 1-meter with a score of 178.30 and eighth place on the 3-meter with a score of 141.55.
