Dennis Baker, 41, Just Misses US Nationals Cut

PORTLAND, Oregon, July 30. MASTERS swimmer Dennis Baker, 41, came agonizingly close to making the 2003 USA Swimming Nationals cut in the 200 meter fly last Sunday.

Swimming a time trial at the USA Swimming Western Sectional meet, Baker, a finalist at the 1980 U.S. Olympic Trials, clocked 2:05.19. The time is under his own Masters world record in the 40-44 age group and only half a second from the cut, 2:04.69.

It was Baker's best effort since he began competing again two years ago. Following sinus surgery for a deviated septum next month, Baker resumes training "so I can move to the next level."

His ultimate goal: competing at the 2004 Olympic Trials.
