NEWARK, Delaware, March 13. THE Delaware High School State Championships took place February 23-26 on the campus of the University of Delaware.
Tatnall's Kaitlyn Jones set two championship records to accompany her two individual event wins. Jones posted a 1:59.03 in the 200 IM, beating her own mark of 2:00.60 set in 2010. She later clocked 55.34 to win the 100 back, surpassing the 55.46 set by Kaitlyn Brady back in 2003. Teammate Nicole Vernon set another championship record to win the 500 free. Vernon clocked 4:46.10, crushing her 2009 mark of 4:48.13. Wilmington Friends' Elise Lankiewicz earned the win in the 100 fly (57.17), while Padua's team of Laura Milowicki, Taylor Shelley, Brittany Lazear, and Corinne Capodanno won the 400 free relay in 3:42.25. A.I. duPont's Leah Hatkevich took first in one meter diving, scoring 352.80 points.
Charter School of Wilmington won all the remaining events on their way to a team title. Lily Dubroff doubled with wins in the 50 (23.73) and 200 free (1:53.63), and teammate Annie Nunes won both the 100 free (51.64) and 100 breast. Nunes clocked 1:02.62 in the 100 breast, narrowly falling short of the championship record of 1:02.58 set by Katherine Rechsteiner last year. Charter's team of Bryn Crowder, Nunes, Lexi Santer, and Dubroff took first in the 200 medley relay (1:48.59), while Nunes, Alicia Howard, Santer, and Dubroff won the 200 free relay (1:38.19).
Charter School of Wilimington won an easy team victory with 365 points. St. Mark took second with 289, while Padua took third with 201.5.
Delaware Military Academy's Tanner Kurz won two individual events with two swift championship records. Kurz took the 100 free in 45.69, beating Roderick Connell's 2004 meet mark of 45.81. He returned later on in the 100 breast to win in 54.64, absolutely obliterating Brent Deputy's record of 56.30 set back in 2003. Delaware Military Academy's team of Travis Payne, Seth Kurz, Adam Keup, and Tanner Kurz took first in the 200 free relay, clocking 1:29.57.
Salesianum's Clifton Gordon also doubled, winning the 200 IM and 100 back. In the 200 IM, he set a meet record of 1:52.09, beating Erik Materniak's 1:52.32 from 2010, and he posted a 50.67 in the 100 back. Salesianum's team of Matthew Tankle, Alex Hampel, Clifton Gordon, and Matthew Stasiunas won the 200 medley relay in 1:36.62, a meet record, and the same foursome also won the 400 free relay in 3:14.19. Salesianum's John Gravatt added team points with his one meter diving win, where he scored a 375.50.
Mt. Pleasant's Tyler Beeson won the 50 free (21.35), while St. Mark's Bryan Panaccione took the 100 fly (52.00). Brandywine's Tommy McKee took first in the 200 free (1:42.56), and Charter's Brad Brooks won the 500 free (4:38.57). Salesianum ended up winning the meet fairly comfortably, scoring 302 points. Charter School of Wilmington finished in second with 265.5, while Delaware Military Academy rounded out the top three with 195.
