Davies Out of European Championships

LONDON, July 11. ONE of the premier distance freestylers in the world, Great Britain’s David Davies will not compete at the European Championships in Budapest, Hungary due to an injury to his left ankle. The reigning Commonwealth Games champion in the 1,500 freestyle, Davies recently had an abscess removed from his ankle. That procedure significantly affected Davies’ preparation.

The Olympic bronze medalist in the metric mile, Davies has adjusted his focus to next year’s World Championships in Melbourne, where he is expected to renew his rivalry with Aussie Grant Hackett and American Larsen Jensen. The three men have separated themselves from the competition in the 1,500 free. Davies has also proven himself a stellar competitor in the 400 free. In his absence, Yuri Prilukov is the favorite for the 1,500 free title at the Euro Champs.
