Dartmouth Invitational, Day One

WHITE RIVER JUNCTION, Vermont, January 28. THE Dartmouth men's swimming and diving team hosted day one of the Dartmouth Invitational at the Upper Valley Aquatic Center on Friday with the Big Green winning four of the six events. Dartmouth is competing against Boston College, UMass, Maine and Bryant.

Freshman Dylan Gabel (Alta Loma, Calif.) set a new pool record, winning the 1000 freestyle with a time of 9:27.95. In the 200-yard IM, the Big Green took the top two spots. Freshman Nejc Zupan (Kamnik, Slovenia) won with a time of 1:51.87, and sophomore Albert Roth (Aurora, Ill.) placed second at 1:53.76. Zupan's time set a new pool record. In the 50-yard freestyle, sophomore Will Derdeyn (St. Louis, Mo.) took the top spot with a time of 20.89. It marked a new career-best for Derdeyn.

The Dartmouth quartet of junior Michael Ahern (Old Westbury, N.Y.), Zupan, Derdeyn and sophomore Zach Doherty (Pelham, N.Y.) touched the wall first in the 200 medley relay. In the 400 freestyle relay, the Big Green's top team finished second.

In the three-meter diving taking place at Karl Michael Pool, senior Michael Brown (Newton, Mass.) took third. He finished behind two UMass divers with 234.90 points.

The Dartmouth women's swimming and diving team hosted day one of the Dartmouth Invitational on Friday at the Upper Valley Aquatic Center, and won all six events. It is an impressive start in a meet that consists of four other teams; Boston College, UMass, Bryant and Maine.

The competition started with the 200 Medley Relay, and the Big Green beat the Minutewomen by a second to claim the top spot. The quartet of freshman Meredith Sweeney (Hinsdale, Ill.), sophomore Charlotte Williams (Boca Raton, Fla.), junior Kelsey Pinson (Portland, Ore.) and freshman Mary Van Metre (Edina, Minn.) finished with a time of 1:48.13. In the 1000-yard freestyle, Dartmouth took the top two spots. Freshman Kirstin Hocheder (Tucson, Ariz.) touched the wall first at 10:25.62, and freshman Christine Kerr (Gainesville, Fla.) placed second at 10:33.09.

Freshman Danielle Kerr (Gainesville, Fla.) won the 200 IM with a time of 2:07.56. In the 50 freestyle, Van Metre took first with a time of 24.43. In the 400 freestyle relay, the quartet of Christine Kerr, Danielle Kerr, Hocheder and Pinson gave Dartmouth a first-place finish, beating the Big Green "B" team by five seconds.

In the one-meter diving taking place at Karl Michael Pool, freshman Katy Feng took the top spot. Feng finished with a total score of 270.25.

The competition continues on Saturday at 10 a.m.
