Dara Torres to be Out up to 18 Months

CORAL SPRINGS, Florida, October 9. ACCORDING to a report by the Associated Press, Dara Torres will be looking at a 12-18 month recovery from major knee surgery.

Previously believed to just need a minor surgery, Torres has learned that she will need an operation called a tibial tubercle osteotomy, which will require a much longer rehabilitation schedule.

According to an excerpt from the AP report:

Torres' shin will be broken and shifted to create more room for cartilage to grow around her kneecap.

She already had the first step in the procedure a couple of weeks ago, when cartilage was removed from a nonweight-bearing area around her anterior cruciate ligament so it can be transplanted to the area around her kneecap during the next operation.

"This is really going be new experience for me," Torres said. "It's a little unnerving. I was seriously freaked out when I read the literature."

While such a major surgery could be considered a career-ender for someone in their 40s, Dara Torres isn't the usual competitor. She's already looking towards the rehab providing motivation to go for the 2012 London Olympics.

"I think this might make me more motivated to go for 2012, just to prove I can get over this," Torres told the AP. "At least I can set this as a goal."
