WILLIAMSBURG, Kent, December 11. THE Cumberland men and women swimmers combined to win the team championship of the Transylvania Invite. This was the final meet of Team I and we preformed as well as any meet that CC has attended in the last few years. Our men’s team finished first and women second for a combined first place finish for the team.
Outstanding swims this meet included Tasha Perry who was first in three events and also set a team record in 50yd. Free. Christen Heideman, also set a team record in the 400 IM and our 200 free relay women including, Perry, Maples, Royer, and Shanks also set a team record. CC swimmers won nine out of ten relays, four women and five men’s. I must say this was a great overall performance. Our men’s Team I is undefeated and our women are 2-0 and have two second places in swim invites,” commented Head Coach Garry Nelson.
Women’s swim captain Tasha Perry set a team record in the 50 free, with a time of 24.98. Perry also placed first in the 100 BK and the 200 BK and the 100 Free. Women’s swimmer Christen Heideman also set a team record in the 400 IM. Heideman also brought home first place finishes in both the 100 and 200 fly. The women’s relay team of Raven Maples, Tasha Perry, Rebecca Shanks, and Lane Royer also set a team record in the 200 free relay. Other first place women’s finishers include Raven Maples in the 50 and 200 free and Rebecca Shanks in the 500 free. The women’s relay teams also won first in the 800, 200, and 400 free relays, and the 200-medley relay.
First place finishes for the men’s team included, Ian Wenstrand in the 100 and 200 backstroke. Duncan Mackie placed first in the 100 and 200 breaststroke. Vito Wagner, Aaron McCormick, and Tyler Morris finished first in the 500 free, 400 IM, and the 50 free, respectively. Brad Mitchell also had first place finishes in both the 200 free and the 100 fly.
The swim team is having an outstanding year and they hope to improve as the season progresses. The swim team will be leaving on December 28th and will be gone until early January to Ft. Lauderdale for winter training.
