GREENSBORO – York YMCA’s Courtney Harnish and Sarasota YMCA’s Drew Clark took home the 1000 freestyle titles on the opening night of the YMCA Short Course Nationals meet at the Greensboro Aquatic Center, while Sarasota jumped out to the lead in the women’s and men’s team standings.

Harnish took home the women’s 1000 free title in 9:33.93, trimming just over a second off her previous personal best of 9:35.39. Schroeder’s Cassy Jernberg dropped three seconds to finish second in 9:38.51, while Downtown Boise’s Abbey Erwin picked up third place honors in 9:47.74.

Sarasota’s Drew Clark came within .15 of cracking the magical nine-minute barrier in the men’s 1000 free with a winning time of 9:00.14, still a 12 second drop from his previous best of 9:12.92. Teammates Daniel Erlenmeyer and Carter Page also had huge time drops, with Erlenmeyer dropping over 15 seconds to finish second (9:03.04) and Page taking off 14 seconds to take third (9:05.04) and give the Sharks a sweep of the top three spots.

Sarasota leads the women’s team rankings after day one with 48 points, with York in second (34 points) and Schroeder in third (29 points). Thanks to the 1-2-3 finish in the men’s 1000, Sarasota has a huge lead in the men’s standings after day one as they lead Countryside Ralph Stolle, 59 points to 18 points. Wilton Family is in third with 16 points.

Sarasota is looking to return to the top of the podium this year after finishing third in the women’s meet last year behind Middle Tyger and York, second behind Wilton in the men’s meet and second overall behind Middle Tyger.
