Coughlin to Headline Janet Evans Invitational

LOS ANGELES, July 12. THE USA Swimming Grand Prix series wraps up this weekend at the Janet Evans Invitational, July 13-16 in Los Angeles, as a handful of Olympians will compete in the final stop in the five-meet Grand Prix circuit.

Eleven U.S. Olympians are scheduled to compete, including individual Olympic medalists Natalie Coughlin (Vallejo, Calif. / Cal Aquatics), Gary Hall Jr. (Miami Beach, Fla. / Cal Aquatics), Larsen Jensen (Bakersfield, Calif. / Trojan) and Allison Wagner (Oakland, Calif. / Cal Aquatics). A handful of international Olympians are also expected to swim at the meet, including three-fourths of South Africa’s world record 400m freestyle relay (Roland Schoeman, Darian Townsend and Lyndon Ferns).

Eighteen members of the Chinese national team – eight men and 10 women – are also scheduled to compete at the JEI. The female sprinters, including Yang Yu and Xu Yanwei, headline the team, which is planning on staying at the University of Southern California facility to train through the end of July.

The event is named after Janet Evans, a four-time Olympic gold medalist and former University of Southern California assistant coach. One of the world’s greatest female Olympic swimmers, Evans still holds two distance freestyle world records (800m and 1500m freestyle).
