INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana, June 25. MICHIGAN's Connor Jaeger pushed the pace early and often in the men's 1500-meter freestyle event as he nearly cleared his lifetime best in the metric mile at the U.S. Nationals and World Championship Trials. Jaeger raced to a winning time of 14:53.34, which jumped him to third in the world rankings behind China's Sun Yang (14:48.10) and Australia's Jordan Harrison (14:51.02).

Jaeger negative split the swim with a 7:57 out and a 7:55 home, as he nearly posted the third 14:52 of his career. Last summer, he clocked a pair of top personal times of 14:52.51 and 14:52.99 at the Trials and Olympics, respectively. Jaeger could have more in the tank heading into Barcelona, but could have a tough time hanging with world-record holder Sun.

The Woodlands' Michael McBroom, meanwhile, snagged the second spot on the roster with a 14:59.12 as he cleared 15:00 for the first time. The performance shot him to seventh in the world, and dropped four seconds from his previous personal best of 15:03.38 from the Charlotte stop of the Arena Grand Prix earlier this year.
