Connecticut Girls State Championships

NEW HAVEN, Connecticut, December 16. GREENWICH High School amassed 579.5 points on its way to winning the Connecticut Girls State Championships, held Nov. 19th-20th. New Canaan finished runner up with 544 points, and Cheshire rounded out the top three girls teams with 422.5 points.

St. Paul's Faith Martin finished the weekend with two state titles to her credit, as she raced to wins in the 200 IM (2:00.90) and 500 free (4:53.41).

Elizabeth McDonald of Pomperaug was another double-event winner. She claimed both sprint crowns with winning times of 23.43 in the 50 free and 51.01 in the 100 free.

Amity's Dana Grindall broke the only state record of the meet, taking down Janel Jorgensen's 1987 standard of 54.82 in the 100 fly with a 54.81 effort.

Also winning titles at the meet were Brookfield's Madeline Smart (200 free, 1:52.05), Wilton's Katie Warburg (one-meter diving, 467.45 points) and Kaylin Moss (100 breast, 1:05.11) and Hall's Jessie Ustjanauskas (100 back, 56.85).

Greenwich turned in two relay victories to fuel its run to the championship, winning the 200 free relay in 1:37.86, just .02 ahead of New Canaan, and the 400 free relay in 3:32.16. New Canaan touched first in the 200 medley relay in 1:48.07.
