Colorado State Leads Early Bird Invite After Day One

FORT COLLINS, Colorado, October 20. THE Colorado State swimming and diving team got off to a good start Friday evening at the Early Bird Invitational. The Rams, who host the annual meet at the Edora Pool and Ice Center (EPIC) in Fort Collins, jumped out to an early lead and have yet to look back.

CSU (409.5) leads the overall points standings on the women's side, followed by conference rival Wyoming (333), Northern Colorado (186), Air Force (131), Colorado (77) and Metro State (42.5).

On the men's side, Wyoming is pacing the competition with a team score of 480, followed by Colorado (260.50) and Metro State (195.5).

The Rams won two of 12 events on Friday, including the opening event, the 200 yard Free Relay. The CSU "A" relay of Karin Knudson, Sarah Snyder, Brette Winegarner and Carmen Cianci exploded out of the gates, finishing in a time of 1:38.30 to win the event while the CSU "B" relay team finished third with a time of 1:39.11.

Alina Roberts and Knudson secured a 1-2 finish in the 50 Free in times of 24.65 and 24.85, respectively. Lyndsey Cox also posted a top-five time for the Rams in the 50 Free, clocking in at 24.92.

In the 500 Free, a trio of Rams took home third through fifth places, led by Valerie Maldonado who posted a 5:11.25. Celes Parks (5:12.07) and Kathleen McCleary (5:13.13) finished fourth and fifth, respectively.

In the 200 IM, Jennifer Muniz and Chandra Engs took home second and third place. Muniz finished in a time of 2:10.22, while Engs posted a 2:11.29.

CSU relay teams also had a good showing in the 400 Medley Relay. The Rams "B" relay of Cox, Nora Kennedy, Annsley Lujan and Snyder posted a time of 3:59.00 for a second-place finish. The "A" relay (Winegarner, Tara Staley, Vicki Curtis and Cianci) finished less than a second behind for third place.

Colorado State divers also enjoyed success on the first day of the Early Bird, finishing 2-3-4 in the 3-meter diving event. Elyse Hall led the way with a 255.35, followed by Nicole Kelly (253.60) and Knudson (252.90).

Competition continues at 9 a.m. Saturday morning from EPIC, with the afternoon session beginning after 2 p.m.
