Colorado Boys High School State Championships

FORT COLLINS, Colorado, May 25. THE Colorado High School Boys 5A State Championships took place Friday, May 20 and Saturday, May 21 at Edora Pool Ice Center in Fort Collins. Meanwhile, the 4A state meet was held at El Pomar Natatorium in Grand Junction.

4A Results
D'Evelyn's Jeff Garnier and Mullen's PJ Wickwire each doubled in freestyle events. Garnier won the 100 (45.88) and 200 (1:38.44) and helped his team to a title in the 200 free relay, where Luke Graber, Josh Graber, Garnier, and Michael Feller swam to a 1:28.31 win. Wickwire, meanwhile, grabbed titles in the 50 (21.40) and 500 free (4:33.52) and anchored Mullen's winning 400 free relay team of Joey Notarianni, Louis Geist, and Brad Belz (3:11.10).

Arvada's Eric May won the 200 IM (1:52.59), while Green Mountain's Micah Blackwell took the win in the 100 fly (51.62). Wheat Ridge's Darian Brunetti earned the 100 back title (51.14), and Longmont's Connor Dwyer – not to be confused with Florida's NCAA champion – won the 100 breast (57.14). Silver Creek won the 200 medley relay (1:37.52) with Drew Weibel, Alex Bisping, Chase Lis, and Topher Apple providing the four legs. Montrose's Kyle Rogers won one meter diving with 411.25 points.

In the team race, Mullen dominated their competition to win with 277 points, followed by Cheyenne Mountain (195) and Silver Creek (170.5).

5A Results
Cherry Creek's Jared Markham starred in 5A competition with two individual wins as well as one relay title. Markham won the 200 IM (1:46.74) and 500 free (4:26.20) in class 5A and Colorado state records and led off Cherry Creek's winning 400 free relay in 45.36, faster than the winning 100 free time at the meet. Joe Powell, Wyatt Oerman, and Daryl Turner brought that relay home to a 3:07.45 victory. Additionally, Turner, John Mattern, Powell, and Andrew Behrend won the 200 medley relay (1:32.88), also a 5A record, while Turner took the individual win in the 100 free (46.34).

Grandview's John Martens won the 200 free (1:40.47), while Lewis-Palmer's Ryan Arata took the 100 back (49.72) and Ponderosa's Mike McCormick the 100 breast (58.17). Regis Jesuit's Ben Fry blazed to the 50 free title (21.12), and teammate Clark Smith grabbed first prize in the 100 fly (48.52). Zach Suter and Luke Suchomel joined Smith and Fry on the winning 200 free relay team (1:24.83). Heritage's Connor Walton won one meter diving with 412.20 points.

In the end, Regis Jesuit edged Cherry Creek for the team title, 296.5 points to 280. Highlands Ranch competed a tight top-three with 268.5 points.
