College Swim Coaches Release Initial Dual Meet Rankings; Auburn Women, Texas Men Tops in the Land

PHOENIX, Arizona, October 23. THE 2007-08 season is under way and so is the College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) Top 25 Coaches' Poll. The first set of rankings, which is a prediction of a team's dual meet strength, has the Auburn Tigers and Texas Longhorns at the top of the women's and men's polls, respectively.

The Auburn women have a new head coach in Richard Quick, while the Texas men are under the tutelage of long-time head coach Eddie Reese. Both of these veteran coaches bring a wealth of knowledge and expertise to their programs.

In the women's voting, the Tigers lead a strong contingent of ranked teams from the Southeastern Conference, which is represented by five squads among the nation's Top 25. Two other conferences, the Pac 10 and the Big Ten, also have five ranked teams. The Pacific 10 leader at this point of the season is the Stanford Cardinal (#2, 1-0) while Minnesota is currently the top ranked team in the Big Ten (#9, 0-1).

While the Longhorns sit atop the men's poll, the Big Ten Conference, which has seven teams in all, has the most ranked teams within the Top 25. The No. 5 Michigan Wolverines (1-0) are the most highly ranked team in the league. The SEC has five teams in the Top 25, with the No. 2 Auburn Tigers leading the way.

This year's poll will be published eight times and the champions will be crowned on Feb. 27, 2008. Pollsters representing eight conferences along with two at-large voters have the task of ranking the top dual meet teams in the nation bi-weekly throughout the season. Additionally, the group of pollsters is completely different for the men's and women's rankings. This poll should not be confused with the results of the NCAA Division I Swimming & Diving championships that will take place in March.

The next poll results will be released on Nov. 1, 2007.
