College Recruit Rankings Profile: Six-Star Kasey Carlson, Class of 2010

By Emily Sampl

BOULDER, Colorado, April 27. CALIFORNIA has been known to produce some of the country’s top breaststrokers, and the Terrapins’ Kasey Carlson looks to be the next rising star ready to make waves on the collegiate and national scene.

Kasey, who will graduate from Las Lomas High School next year, has posted top times of 59.94 and 2:09.66 in the 100- and 200-yard breaststrokes, which has earned her a six-star ranking from Swimming World Magazine. Last summer, she competed at the 2nd FINA World Youth Championships in Guam as a member of the National Junior Team, as well as the U.S. Olympic Trials.

As one of only a handful of six-star recruits, she will be heavily sought-after by the top schools in the country. Kasey said she can’t wait for the college swimming experience, and though it’s still early in the recruiting process, she has already looked at a few schools.

“The college search is going along well,” she said. “So far, on my own, I have visited Cal, USC and UCLA, and I look forward to visiting others. I know it will be a tough decision in the fall.”

Kasey has been swimming for the Terrapins for the past five years under Coach Paul Stafford. With his guidance she has improved enormously, and she credits him for helping her succeed in the sport.

“Paul has helped me to improve and be successful in the sport,” she said. “I wouldn’t be where I am today without his unique coaching.”

Fortunately, Kasey hasn’t had to deal with any injuries in her career thus far, aside from minor knee and ankle problems that can commonly plague breaststrokers. Avoiding injuries will certainly be important in her ascent to becoming one of the top swimmers in the U.S.

At the upcoming World Championship Trials, Kasey hopes to place well and possibly earn a trip to Rome for this summer’s World Championships.

“Right now I am training for my high school section championships, then I am looking towards World Championship Trials,” she said. “I hope to make top eight in the 100 breast, and possibly earn a trip to Rome.”

Whether or not she lands a spot on the team, Kasey Carlson is definitely one to watch out for in the near future.
