College Recruit Rankings Profile: Four-Star Emily Andelson

PHOENIX, Arizona, June 3. EMILY Andelson, a four-star recruit for the Class of 2009 from Palm Desert, Calif., is next up in the Swimming World College Recruit Rankings profile series. Andelson swims for Palm Desert High and Dwight Hernandez of the Piranha Swim Team.

Andelson, who is an active member of the Swimming World College Recruit Rankings powered by Take Your Marks, has taken control of her profile.

Andelson already has four times that would have cleared the NCAA Division I B Cut this last year. She boasts top times in the 100 free (50.10), 200 free (1:48.67), 100 back (55.63) and 100 fly (54.82).

Where and when did you start swimming?
I started swimming when I was eight years old, but I didn't compete in a meet until I was 10. I started consistently going to practice when I was 13 years old. At that time, I also gave up one of my true loves, basketball. The last two basketball teams I played on were boys' teams and I loved the fast competition of the boys' team.

The first swim team I joined was Palm Desert Aquatics, and the team I swim with now is the Piranha Swim Team in Palm Springs, Calif.

Who would you name as the most influential person and coach in your swimming career?
The most influential person in my life is my mom because she spends so much time helping me with my swimming. Whether it is to drive me to morning practice at 4:30 a.m. then back to practice at 4 p.m., or to show an interest in my academics she is always there for me.

My coach, Dwight Hernandez, has been coaching me for four years. Coach Dwight has helped me in many ways with my swimming. He always provides challenging workouts, and he also helps me prepare mentally for swim meets.

What, to this point, is your best moment in the sport and why?
I was so excited when I received the letter from USA Swimming informing me that I had made the 2007-08 National Junior Team. The Team traveled to Melbourne, Australia to compete in the Victoria State Championships in January 2008. I was able to meet other swimmers from throughout the United States.

Walk us through a day of practice.
During the school year, I have practice three mornings from 5-6:30 a.m. This practice consists of warm up, a kick set, a pull set and cool down. My afternoon practice is from 4-6 p.m. It typically consists of a warm up, a kick set, and a main set, which for me is normally a sprint set. During the summer, we have six morning practices that are long course and three afternoon short course practices.

What is your favorite set?
My favorite set is the following long course set.
2 X 100 all-out on 3:00, 400 easy
4 X 50 all-out on 2:00, 400 easy
8 X 25 all-out on 1:00, 400 easy
I really enjoy sprint workouts, and this set helps me focus on all my events/strokes, free, back and fly. For each part of the set, I get to choose the stroke.

What is your least favorite set?
My least favorite set is also a long course set.
4 X 50 all-out on 2:00, 400 easy
3 X 100 all-out on 4:00, 400 easy
2 X 200 all-out on 8:00, 400 easy
The set is all freestyle, so I have no chance to practice fly or back.

What are your short-term goals?
My short-term goals are to swim Olympic Trial times in the 50 and 100 free, 100 fly and 100 back. I want to decide on the college I will attend, and receive straight As in school this year and my senior year.

What are your long-term goals?
My long-term goals are to swim in the A finals (free, back and fly) at NCAAs. I also hope to do well academically in college and have a successful career after that.

Why have you listed Arizona, California, UCLA and USC as your colleges of interest?
I have listed these schools as my colleges of interest because they all have strong academic and swim programs and all four have outstanding coaches. I believe all of these schools will allow me to reach my swimming and academic goals. I also want to stay close to home.
