College Recruit Rankings Profile: Five-Star Caitlin Hamilton, Class of 2009

PHOENIX, Arizona, July 11. NOW that we are back in the saddle after an intense U.S. Olympic Trials, Swimming World's College Recruit Rankings Profile series returns with a five-star freestyler from the Class of 2009.

Caitlin Hamilton of Waves of BNY and Normal Community is the next up to feel the spotlight.

Hamilton, who is in charge of her own profile in the Swimming World College Recruit Rankings powered by Take Your Marks, qualified for the U.S. Olympic Trials in both the 400 free (4:18.46) and 800 free (8:48.69).

Hamilton also has NCAA Division I B cut times in the 500-yard free (4:51.59) and 1650-yard free (16:25.45).

Where and when did you start swimming?
I learned how to swim at a pretty young age at the town's local swim lessons. I've been working with my coach (Charlie Yourd) for almost 11 years with the WAVES.

Who would you name as the most influential person and coach in your swimming career?
People, would have to be my parents who have continually supported my swimming, and without Charlie I wouldn't be any where near as good as I am today. He constantly pushes me to get me to mix my talent with hard work and dedication for optimal results.

What, to this point, is your best moment in the sport and why?
Being a part of this summer's Olympic Trials has by far been the greatest moment in my swimming. Knowing that I'm there competing against the best swimmers in the country is not only satisfying, but incredibly motivating.

Walk us through a day of practice:
During the school year I practice MWF morning 5:00-6:45 and also from 5-7:30 or 8 at night. On Monday and Wednesday, we usually work on upper body and core dry land work outside of the pool, and do stroke work, kicking with shoes, pulling, and things of that nature. Tuesday and Thursday are 5:00-7:30 with a short leg circuit before practice, usually mixed with VO2 max sets or another type of high intensity workouts. Saturdays we have an am from 7:00-9:00 with the core circuit following, and another hard practice from 3:00-5:00 pm.

What is your favorite set?
I enjoy doing sets of VO2 max for example:
3×150 on the 2:15 all out
400 easy
4×100 on the 1:40 all out + a sprint 50
400 easy
6×75 on the 1:00 all out
400 easy
*starting off the block at the beginning of each round

What is your least favorite set?
4200 broken by 100 free, 100 IM, 100 fly

What are your short-term goals?
Right now, I'm concentrating on choosing a college to swim for, but am also working towards carrying my success this year over to my senior year.

What are your long-term goals?
While at college, I want to be able to contribute the most points at NCAAs that I possibly can. By the end of my college career, I also desire to be a national champion.

What colleges are you interested in so far?
I'm interested in Indiana, Northwestern, Purdue, Wisconsin, North Carolina, Texas, and Tennessee

How is the recruiting process going?
Great! I'm excited to narrow down my choices to the schools I want to visit here in the upcoming weeks, and then proceed to go on those visits in the fall and finally pick a school.

Is there anything else that you'd like our readers to know about you?
I just want to thank my family and friends who have been so supportive over the past few years of me and my swimming.
