Colgate Women Complete Undefeated Home Season with Win Against Cornell

HAMILTON, N.Y. January 21. THE Colgate women’s swimming team completed an undefeated home season with a 151-149 win against Cornell on Saturday, Jan. 21, at Lineberry Natatorium. The victory was the first for the Raiders (7-2) against the Big Red in 24 years.

The meet came down to the final event of the day. Colgate needed to at least finish second and third in the 400 freestyle relay, and the Raiders came through. The foursome of junior Keriann Fitzsimons (Red Hook, N.Y.), sophomore Colby Seamans (Naperville, Ill.), sophomore Allie Lenci (Fairfield, Conn.) and freshman Emily Murphy (Syracuse, N.Y.) placed second with a time of 3:36.57. Freshman Ashley Bottger (Weston, Conn.), sophomore Magdalena Mango (New York, N.Y.), sophomore Caitlin Grant (Seekonk, Mass.) and freshman Lisa Marchi (Scottsdale, Ariz.) clinched the win by earning two points with a third-place finish and a time of 3:37.69.

Freshman Beverly Walker (Marietta, Ga.) set the Colgate freshman record with the third-fastest time in school history and a win in the 200 back, posting a time of 2:05.76. Walker placed second in the 100 back with a time of 59.73, and was second in the 100 fly with the eighth-best time in Colgate history, 58.65.

The Raiders opened with a win in the 200 medley relay. Walker, sophomore Kacy Reams (Evanston, Ill.), senior Chrissy Zaika (Syracuse, N.Y.) and Fitzsimons posted the eighth-fastest time in school history, 1:50.06.

Marchi won the 100 free in the 10th-fastest time ever recorded by a Raider, 53.03, and won the 200 free with a time of 1:54.84. Marchi got her third victory of the meet after swimming the 500 free in 5:08.90, beating her runner up by nearly four seconds.

Murphy swam to victory in the 100 breast with the fifth-fastest time in school history, 1:06.09. She also won the 200 breast, turning in a time of 2:25.18. Mango finished second with a personal-best time of 2:31.29.

Zaika swam the 50 free in a winning time of 24.66, and placed third in the 100 free with a time of 54.20. In the 1650 free, senior co-captain Amy Cole (Loudonville, N.Y.) finished second with a time of 18:23.31. Senior Kim Hayes (Beverly, Mass.) posted a personal-best time of 2:26.12 in the 200 IM.

Senior Emily McAulliff (Springfield, Ill.) placed second in the three-meter diving competition with a personal-best score of 279.45. Senior Jen Rodgers (Glenmont, N.Y.) placed third in the event with 253.35 points. McAuliff finished second on the one-meter board with 240.08 points.

Colgate concludes its dual-meet schedule at Binghamton on Saturday, Jan. 28, starting at 1:00 p.m.
