Colgate vs. Bucknell

HAMILTON, New York, January 9. THE Colgate men’s swimming and diving squad suffered a 192-96 loss to visiting Bucknell, Saturday afternoon at Lineberry Natatorium.

The Raiders, who fell to 0-5 on the year, claimed first place points in the final two events as Devon Healy (New Canaan, Conn.) was credited with the win in the 400 IM (4:11.05) and the 400 free relay team consisting of Dan Sweeney (New Canaan, Conn.), Costas Hadjipateras (New Canaan, Conn.), Robert Rutkowski (Lititz, Pa.) and Tucker Gniewek (Mountain Lakes, N.J.) posted a winning time of 3:09.63, which stands as the 10th fastest time in Colgate history.

Seven different Raiders accounted for second place efforts. Teddy Perley (Harrison, N.Y.) was out touched for first in the 100 breast (1:01.33), while Rutkowski settled for second in the 100 fly (52.79) by .06 seconds. Healy captured second in the 1650 free (17:09.49) and Hadjipateras was second in the 500 free (4:57.12). Both Colgate divers each recorded second place efforts as well. Tyler Makepeace (Wallingford, Conn.) was runner-up from the one-meter board (222.97), while Nick Burkus (Weston, Mass.) finished second in three-meters (213.75).

The foursome of Sweeney, Perley, Rutkowski and Hadjipateras touched with a time of 1:37.13 in the 200 medley relay, which was good enough for a second place effort.

Colgate returns to action, next Saturday as it hosts Cornell. The meet is set for a 1 p.m. start at Lineberry Natatorium.

For the women, the Colgate women’s swimming and diving team rallied from a 21-point deficit in the second half of the meet en route to posting a thrilling 156-142 come-from-behind victory over Patriot League rival, Bucknell, Saturday afternoon at Lineberry Natatorium.

Colgate, which evened its record to 3-3 on the year, received four wins from Caren Guyett (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.), while Emma Santoro (River Fall, Mass.) was a triple winner. The victory stretched the Raiders’ home win streak to nine consecutive.

Colgate did most of its damage in the final three events of the meet. Trailing by as many as 23, Colgate gradually erased the deficit starting in the 500 free by capturing first and third place finishes from Guyett (5:02.71) and Jenna Daly (Garden City, N.Y.), who finished with a 5:16.63. The Raiders followed with a one-two finish in the 100 fly as Erin McGraw (Penfield, N.Y.) claimed the race with a winning time of 56.99, while freshman Lia Kunnapas (Hasbrouck Heights, N.J.) out touched Bucknell’s Molly Goebel by .01 with a performance of 59.31 for second.

Trailing 135-127 heading into the 400 IM, Colgate grabbed its first lead since the early stages of the meet as Guyett, McGraw, and Derlath copped the top three finishes to give the Raiders a five point advantage heading into the final event. Guyett finished with a time of 4:29.65, while McGraw and Derlath posted performances of 4:30.43 and 4:32.56 respectively.

The trio of Santoro, Kim Siembieda (Narbeth, Pa.), and Kate Murphy (Williamsburg, Va.) handed over a lead to Guyett and the junior anchored the 400 free relay with split of 51.51 to hold off Bucknell in the end. Colgate never trailed at any point in the final race.

Guyett led a one two finish in the 200 fly by touching with a time of 2:06.50, while teammate Emily Kelly (Potomac, Md.) followed the junior with a second place effort with a time of 2:12.02.

Santoro swept both races in the breaststroke. The freshman captured the 100 with a winning time of 1:07.71 and then returned to touch with a winning time of 2:23.40. Derlath claimed the 1650 (17:27.70), while Kunnapas won the 200 back (2:05.18).

Kim Pilka (Great Falls, Va.) placed second in both diving events and Kunnapas picked up a second in the 100 back as well.

Colgate returns to action next Saturday as it hosts archrival Cornell. The meet starts at 1 p.m. at Lineberry Natatorium.
