Coach Jeno Tihanyi Passes Away

SUDBURY, Ontario, March 7. JENO Tihanyi, who guided the career of Canada's Alex Baumann, passed away Sunday after a battle with cancer. A native of Hungary, Tihanyi started his coaching career with the Vancouver Amateur Swim Club in 1964 and went on to become a member of the Canadian National Team staff.

Tihanyi began working with Baumann when his protégé was a 9-year-old and molded the swimmer into a gold medalist at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics in the 200 and 400 individual medley events. Baumann established 17 world records from 1981-86. Tihanyi was a four-time winner of the Canadian Coach of the Year award and was inducted into the Canadian Olympic Hall of Fame.
