Clyde Lewis Among Medal Winners on Day One of the 2015 Commonwealth Youth Games

The Commonwealth Youth Games recently kicked off in Samoa with youth from around the globe gathering to demonstrate their skills and to win medals for their countries. The swimming portion of the Games began with several people earning multiple medals on day one.

Northern Ireland’s Conor Ferguson started the meet off with a win in the men’s 100-meter back finishing with a time of 55.87. Australia’s Clyde Lewis finished second overall with a time of 56.19, while Bailey Main of New Zealand grabbed  third with a 56.95.

New Zealand went 1-2 in the women’s 100-meter back with Bobbi Gichard finishing first with a final time of 1:00.51 and Gabrielle Fa’Amausili taking second with a 1:00.86. South Africa’s Nathania Van Niekerk was third with a 1:03.00.

The men’s 1500-meter free was led by England’s Tom Derbyshire who posted a winning time of 15:31.18. Welson Wee Sheng Sim of Malaysia took second with a time of 15:57.72, and Australia’s Tristan Zudlow finished third overall with a time of 16:06.06.

The men’s 200-meter fly went to Wilrich Coltree of New Zealand and his time of 2:01.85. Supriya Mondal of India grabbed second with a finishing time of 2:01.94. Brendan Levy of South Africa rounded out the top three with a time of 2:02.19.

Australia’s Gemma Cooney posted a winning time of 2:13.51 in the women’s 200-meter fly. Meg Finnon of Scottland and Tazmin Pugh of England kept it close for second, but it was Finnon who won out posting a time of 2:14.21 for the silver. Pugh took bronze with a time of 2:14.69.

Clyde Lewis grabbed his second medal of the meet in the men’s 200-meter free with a winning time of 1:48.88. Welson Wee Sheng Sim posted a time of 1:49.22 for second, while Kyle Chisholm of England grabbed third with a 1:51.21.

England’s Georgina Boyle grabbed first in the women’s 200-meter free posting a final time of 2:00.72. Kathryn Greenslade of Wales finished second overall with a time of 2:01.64, while Australia’s Shayna Jack rounded out the top three with a time of 2:01.89.

Zane Waddell of South Africa dashed to first in the men’s 50-meter fly winning with a time of 24.52. Brayden McCarthy of Australia grabbed second with a time of 24.90, while England’s Lewis Clough was a close third with a time of 24.94.

South Africa’s Erin Paige Gallagher collected a gold medal in the women’s 50-meter fly with a time of 27.20. Australia’s Lucia Lassman and Cooney went 2-3 for the event.
