Clemson vs. Davidson

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina, October 1. THE Clemson Tigers opened the 2011-12 swimming and diving season with a victory over the Davidson Wildcats in a dual meet on Saturday afternoon. The women's team defeated the Wildcats 177-123, while the men's team won 153-135. This was the season opener for both teams.

On the women's side, the Tigers began the meet with a victory in the 200 medley relay. Ali Polhill, Maddie Tarantolo, Sarah Bechard, and Kristen Redmond were victorious in the event with a combined time of 1:48.93. They also closed the meet with a win in the 400 free relay behind a 3:36.87 swim by Meg Anderson, Polhill, Redmond, and Tori Cervone.

Cervone and Redmond finished first and second in the 1000 free. Cervone finished with a time of 10:43.72, while Redmond was slightly behind her at 10:47.07. Anderson won the 200 free with a time of 1:54.57. Kelly Fowler also picked up a victory in the 100 back, swimming her heat in 59.78 seconds.

Clemson got a sweep of the top three spots in the 200 fly, as Cervone (2:09.62), Rocky Raybon (2:10.81), and Sarah Bechard (2:11.04) occupied those positions. Anderson then picked up her second victory of the day with a 23.56-second swim in the 50 free. Kelsey Krauss was victorious in the 100 free with a time of 53.25 seconds.

Cervone's third win of the day came in the 500 free. Her time of 5:11.82 was followed closely by Redmond's second-place 5:12.88 swim. Bechard won in the 100 fly with a time of 58.68 seconds, and Krauss came in third place with a 59.39-second swim. McLaughlin finished in second place in the 200 IM with a time of 2:13.05.

In diving, the Tigers picked up each of the top four spots in the one-meter as Brooke George (280.58), Emily Howard (235.35), and newcomers Chelsea Uranaka (229.51) and Jessica Doolittle (219.02) topped the leaderboard. Howard and Uranaka also topped the charts in the three-meter with scores of 244.38 and 216.53, respectively.

The men's team also bookended the meet with relay victories. Chris Dart, Chris Reinke, Seth Broster, and Eric Bruck combined to win in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:33.59, while Broster, Reinke, Myles Oliver, and Bruck were victorious in the 400 free relay with a time of 3:06.43.

Alex Carr (9:45.52), Andrew Abeysinghe (10:09.94), and Will Clark (10:11.03) finished 2-3-4 in the 100 free. Layne (53.50) and Oliver (53.59) posted second- and third-place times in the 100 back. Dart was victorious in the 100 breast with a swim of 58.57 seconds. Harry Foster finished second in the 200 fly with a time of 1:55.68.

Broster (21.38) and Derek Barre (21.71) finished in first and second place in the 50 free. Bruck and Reinke followed with a 1-2 finish in the 100 free with times of 45.58 and 47.00 seconds, respectively. Abeysinghe finished second in the 200 back with a time of 1:54.17, while Dart was second in the 200 breast with a swim of 2:10.18.

Broster (50.71) and Foster (50.89) finished in second and third place, respectively, in the 100 fly. Dart ended the individual portion of the meet with a victory in the 200 IM with a time of 1:53.28, and Shayne Buckley came in third place in the event with a time of 2:00.62.

In diving, Braver won both the one-meter and three-meter events. He won the one-meter with a score of 220.42 and was the victor in the three-meter with a score of 199.05.

The Tigers will be back in the pool on Saturday, October 15, when they will travel to Limestone.
