Clay Britt Enjoying Break Following Successful Nationals

By Emily Sampl

BOULDER, Colorado, June 25. AFTER coming down with an illness just prior to the USMS Short Course National Championships in May, Clay Britt had no idea what to expect at the meet. It's probably safe to say that he surprised himself and the competition.

Swimming in the same pool he competed in as a college swimmer at the University of Texas, Britt put on a clinic in the highly competitive men's 45-49 age group. Britt walked away with two national titles in the 50 back (24.31) and 100 back (52.33), setting new national records in both. He also finished third in the 100 IM in a time of 53.72, which cleared his previous record of 54.56.

"It was an absolute thrill to swim there again," he said. "It completely exceeded my expectations, and I had a lot of fun racing."

After the meet, Britt took about five weeks off, and is now training a couple times a week. With no plans to compete in the immediate future, this schedule will probably continue for a while.

"I may or may not swim a meet in August, and I don't have any goals for next year either," he said.

Last summer, Britt and his wife adopted a little girl from Vietnam, so spending time with her remains his number one priority at the moment. But that doesn't mean he's not still thinking about that next race, whenever it may come.

"I love to compete. Probably the thing that gets me the highest is stepping up on the blocks," he said. "You transform into a racer. Everything comes together."
