City of Fort Lauderdale Closes Grandstand Seating Area at Aquatic Complex, YMCA Short Course Nationals Reviewing Options

FORT LAUDERDALE, Florida, January 27. ACCORDING to information coming forward from the YMCA, city engineers of Fort Lauderdale "recommended the closure of the entire grandstand seating area" of the Fort Lauderdale Aquatic Complex, resulting in a loss of 1,500 seats for the YMCA Short Course Nationals to be held there April 5-8.

The YMCA has put together a committee including representatives of the Pool, the City of Fort Lauderdale, leadership of the YMCA of the USA, the YMCA Coaches Association, the National Advisory Committee, the Officials Committee and the Meet Committee. This group is currently looking towards either ways to reconfigure the Fort Lauderdale complex to create enough seating for athletes, families, officials and volunteers, or will potentially look towards alternate event locations.

An on-site visit to Fort Lauderdale has been schedule for Jan. 31-Feb. 2 with the goal of having a more detailed plan to move forward by Feb. 10, as announced by the YMCA today on its web site.
